Kitten drinking alot of water (finishing bowl)

Hi

I have a kitten about 15 weeks old. We feed him on wet pouch kitten food. We have not changed his food or brand. I was in the kitchen and seen that his water bowl was empty, so I topped it up. He went stright over and started to drink from it. As I look on I didnt think he was going to stop he drank the lot. Then started to hev/rench. I then told my partner and she said she already re-filled the bowl twice today. Anyone any ideas? Im going to ring the vet tomorrow if he is still doing the same. I am not going to give him anymore water untill the morning.

It sounds like he is dehydrated. How are his gums - are they pale? If you hold the skin on the back of his neck does it take a while to go back. All signs of dehydration.

IMO I wouldn't take the water away from him I'd just give those vets a ring as soon as

Don't take the water away...if he's that thirsty then he needs water.

Your vet will do some tests and hopefully there is not a serious problem. However I am concerned about kidney disease (any toxic plants such as lillies in the house?) or diabetes.

Hope he is ok!

Dr. Marie.

My kitten drinks a lot of water too, although not that much. He will sometimes drink half the bowl in one go. He's 14 weeks. Can kittens have kidney disease at that age? If so, what would cause it? Or diabetes? Isn't that weight-related? He is currently normal size for his age, although he had cat flu (FCV) and worms before I got him. Could it be connected...??

I would take him to vets to be checked as that does sound like a lot of water, is he fed on only dry food as that can cause them to drink but not to excess.

He does have dry food (Hills Science plan) which he loves, but has wet food as well. He will eat a meal of Hills dry food overnight. Although he can drink half a bowl, I only see him do it maybe twice a day, not constantly. I have heard that kittens can drink alot more than adult cats due to their activity levels, I guess that makes sense, especially with Treacle..!!!

The fact he's drinking a lot in one go ( like humans when actually thirsty ) shows he's either on the verge of or actually is dehydrated, neither of which is good for the kidneys, for one thing.

For this reason I would switch him to an all wet diet ( you can always add a little water ) and if symptoms persisted I would have have him vet checked, just to be on the safe side. Yes, kittens can and do suffer from renal problems-more commonly due to infections and occasionally PKD-as opposed to the chronic form seen in older cats!

Alternatively the wet you're currently feeding may have a high sodium content.
