Should I change foods

I have posted similar q elsewhere but I thought I would rephrase it.

My 6 - almost 7 - month old Tonkinese had to be put on Royal Canin SC31 by the vet to control his upset tummy. It was working for a few weeks but now he is back to loose stools again. I bought the first pack from the vet but sourced it cheaper online so bought it there. Exactly the same packaging and description but the biscuits were much lighter in colour.

I wondered if it might be a faulty batch?

I also have my 4 mth old Bengal on the same food as the breeder told me it would be fine but he has also developed runny stools.

Should I try something different with them?

My Tonkinese will eat wet or dry but my Bengal turns his nose up at wet and will only eat dry.

Any suggestions would be great.

Thanks

xx

Re: Should I change foods

hi

i think changing foods couldmake matters worse
as with most animals, sudden changes in diet can cause tummy upsets
and a few minor stool troubles

you could however gradualy try difrent things and seewhat gets the best results

it could be the batch of food you got

this may sound silly but have you tryed worming treatment recently?

now we had simlar issues with our cat
and we found out loose stools can be a sign of worms present

we got worming treatment in the form of syrup not powder as as most people will tell you tablets or powder in with food is practcaly an imposible mission lol

but yeah after a few days it went away so we thought perhaps it was a case of worms or just an upset tummy

i can only suggest try that if you havent recenty tryed worming
or gradual changes of food like gradualy mix over a few days untill you have changed foods then keep at it for a week if no change gradualy change again

but if worried i would consult vet for expert advice as it does sound
more like tummy troubles

anyways
good luck with that

Re: Should I change foods

Yes they were both wormed just over a week ago.

I just don't understand how they can change from being ok on the food one minute to it not agreeing with them the next.

Like I said the only thing I could think of was maybe the particular batch of food - as I said the biscuits were much lighter than the previous pack.

Thanks

Re: Should I change foods

There was some discussion on another pedigree cat forum about RC batches. A few breeders had bought food, the same as always and all the cats had got upset tummys. I think some had contacted RC and were asked to send samples of the food back. Not sure what happened though.
You could try a raw diet, thats good for cats with tummy problems. Quite a few of us on here feed raw. There is the Orijen dry biscuits too

Re: Should I change foods

I have tried to find some info on the recall which you mentioned but I cannot find much.
It looks like it was about a year ago though, my bag has a best before date of 2009 so I don't know how recently that would be made.

I cannot find an email contact for Royal Canin so if anyone knows one then that would be great. UK please - I don't think the US site would deal with it.

Thanks

Here's the contact details for Royal Canin

Royal Canin
United Kingdom and Ireland
Crown Pet Foods (Ltd)
Oak Tree Meadow
Blackworthy Road
Castle Cary
Somerset, BA7 7PH
0845 300 5011

I normally like to use email when getting in touch with places, but I found that with most products the number they have listed provides the most help. If you have any concern about the food at all, I'd definitely call and let them know. They'd be able to send you out some postage paid envelopes to send the food to them in so they can run a lab test. As it's your pet's health in question it's probably wiser to phone them so the ball gets rolling faster.

Definitely let your vet know what's going on as well, it could be any number of things. I hope they feel better soon!

Re: Should I change foods

One of my girls always had a slightly dodgy tummy and was often sick. Since changing to the Orijen we have had no problems!

Re: Should I change foods

Royal canin contains corn and grain, Betula had an upset tummy too however she was on crappy felix aswel. If it was me id slowly over several weeks wean onto orijen or OrganiPets Organic Pet Food

They could have a parasite which is quite common now. Do they have blood in their poo? If there is blood in their stool, and it is odoriferous, it is a parasite. Could well be Coccidia or Giardia. Call your vet and ask if you can have them test a fecal sample. It will need to be fresh out of the cat, and as uncontaminated by litter as possible.

In the meantime, if you can go to a health food store and get a can of plain pureed pumpkin without spices in it, and mix it with their food, this will help the intestinal lining inflamation to calm down, and it will help to firm there stools. Better yet, on the pumpkin, just get some Applaw's cat food with chicken and pumpkin - one of their major types!! It's 25% pumpkin and will help them immensely until you can get that feacal smear done and start treatment.

Re: Should I change foods

Thanks for that.

I am thinking now about changing their diet so am now just confused by all the fantastic products many people on here use.

I would need a complete dry biscuit as Darwin - the Bengal- doesn't like wet, or I am assuming he doesn't as he has only ever had whiskas not any on the real ones!!!

Is it safe to give them raw mince as Toby was hanging off my leg earlier when I was preparing tea.

Thanks

xx
