Exclamation doxycycline

hello, a quick query really does anyone know if doxycycline used to treat chlamydia in cats is the same prescription drug used to treat humans before they go abroad? i was just a little concerned when the vet mentioned it.

Thanks

Re: doxycycline

I don't know what you mean about treating before going abroad, but Doxycycline is the same drug used to treat chlamydia in humans.

Re: doxycycline

Yes, hun, it's the same drug but probably in a different dose. It's used to treat chlamydia in people too. Why has it got you concerned?

Re: doxycycline

i probably sound silly but i always thought that animals needed completely different drugs to humans i also thought it a bit strange that one drug could treat 2 different medical problems in 2 different species. I didn't want to ask the vet in case he thought i was stupid....

No, not at all, although sometimes the drugs have different 'brand names' for animals. Another one used in animals and humans is Flagyl (metronidazole) used to treat gum infections & thrush in people, but used for Giardia in animals (or was until it was realised Panacur works better - same drug family, fenbendazole). Many many other examples as well.

wow thanks! i wish i had your brains! I just like to know what is being given to my little ones! I've learnt so much from this website and i've just completed a form be volenteer at an RSPCA cattery just so that i can broaden my knowledge about cats. I've now got three but only got my first one 6 months ago so i just want to make sure i am prepared for every situation. I'm keeping a folder of treatments and advice given by the vet and useful info that i find on this site.... I'm a teacher and the students call me the cat woman (in a kind way)

Brains - debatable.... lolol. To quote Connor Cruise O'Brien (irish politician & writer)... "I've been described as a lighthouse in the middle of a bog.... brilliant but useless."

Re: doxycycline

and Synulox (animal antibiotic) is the same as Augmentin (human antibiotic) both are amoxycillin/clavulanic acid.

there are loads of drugs the same for humans and animals. We'e all mammals and share quite a few similarities
