Cystitis & use of water fountains

My 8 year old cat has just been diagnosed with a major urine infection (loads of blood in his urine etc) and is now on a hefty course of antibiotics and the vet has given him Hills wet food.

My question is, has anyone bought a water fountain for their cat?

I have seen these advertised - apparently the constantly moving water attracts the cat to the water thus encouraging them to drink more, which can help prevent urinary infections.

Any feedback would be appreciated.

Re: Cystitis & use of water fountains

We've had a couple of fountains. The catit, the freshflow and the Drinkwell. The one they love most is the Drinkwell. We have the platinum version. The catit is a bit fussy to clean and my cats didn't use that one much. The freshflow wasn't a big hit either. Some of them drink from the bowl and others from the flowing water.

we have the catit one with a dome and reservoir - the cats all use it and the kittens learn to drink from it. It's brill (if a little fiddly to clean)

Re: Cystitis & use of water fountains

Mine all preferred the Cat It water dome, but if you live in a hard water area, the motor just doesn't last that long, and the filters need changing far quicker than they say they do.

Cat It have a new one, that looks like a tall bowl and the water circulates within the bowl. Less fiddly cleaning, but still fresh moving water. I am tempted to try a few of those. Fresh and Clear Cat Drinking Fountain by Cat It | Pets at Home

Water fountains aside, if your cat normaly has a dry diet I would change that gradually over to wet and or fresh once he is well. I would also ask your vet about CystAid, that helps soothe and repair the inflammed bladder and urethra.

Re: Cystitis & use of water fountains

Thanks for your comments - so quickly as well - really appreciated.

Merlin has been eating mainly wet food, with one portion of dry to keep him going overnight (mainly as he bangs his food bowl all night otherwise!).

The vet has given me a supply of Hills Prescription pouches of wet food. Merlin is not very impressed but has eaten it. Having done a bit of research, I see this is also available on-line from Pet Planet (amongst others). I am told he may have to stay on this for life.

If anyone has any other advice about prevention/cure of this condition, I would be interested as Merlin is the only cat I have ever had - although I have had him since he was a kitten, I am still learning.

Re: Cystitis & use of water fountains

If you look on Best Pet Pharmacy, they do several things you can give long term in the form of supplements, or palatable pastes that contain things to prevent UTIs and stones etc. They aren't that expensive.

Even though he only has one meal of dry a day, its probably better to either reduce the amount or cut it out altogether, just incase. You could try him on chunks of raw meat or a raw chicken drumstick to gnaw on overnight, if he will eat them. The amount of water they have to drink to compensate for even a small bowl of dry is more than a cat would think to drink, even with a water fountain, its quite surprising. Any thing you can do to keep him "flushed" through will help.

Another quick thought, if he does have to stay on a diet formula, try the RC version of the urinary diet. That is highly palatable. I had that for one of mine once, and I had to fight the others off it, just bring it into the room aroused attention so it obviously smells good to a cat.

Cat Mate Multi Level Water Fountain - £18.75 : Pinky Pawz - Simply ... the cats whiskers!, Pinky Pawz - Simply ... the cats whiskers!

The above fountain is the best we have tried. We used to have the dome ones but we went through two living in a hard water area and it was messy to clean. The above one is dead easy and better still it is so so quiet!
Hope the picture works!
