Whats with all the yelling?

Hi

Just joined up today, need some advice on my two girls. The main problem is with my youngest though. I am new to owning female cats, always had males in the past.

Shes 4 months old (roughly) and has started yelling and yelling and yelling. Its every couple of weeks, for about a week and I am soon to go insane. I got 2 hours sleep last night.

I have done some research and heard that it is likely that shes gone into heat, which can happen at her age and can be quite frequent after then rather than the 2 or 3 times a year which I thought it was. Is this correct? Also for spaying, we were told that 6 months was the youngest age, so what can I do until then to stop her yelling?!!

Thank you!

Re: Whats with all the yelling?

She can be spayed now Just talk to your vet - I know breeders who spay their kittens before they leave, so earlier than 13 weeks old.

Hopefully your vet will spay her now; if they don't then you will obviously need to keep her in when she is calling - if she is driving you demented and peeing everywhere you could ask the vet for say Overid or Delvasteron (spelling?!) but I really wouldn't go down this line if you can help it at all.

Try to persuade the vet to spay her - there is no real reason why she can't be spayed now. We have our kittens done at 13-14 weeks, keep them a week to 10 days after to ensure they are okay, before they go to their new homes. Our vets say it is the size that matters rather than age!

if your vet won't consider spaying her, you could try another vet practice.

Re: Whats with all the yelling?

Thanks! I have rung the vets and got her an appointment for this evening. I hope they will listen, they have been excellent with our other cat.

The receptionist seemed to think it might be an urinary infection due to her age but hopefully the vet will shed some light on this.

Re: Whats with all the yelling?

Update: The vet immediately said she in heat and its perfectly normal at her age. He has kept her in and is going to perform the spaying this morning so we can collect her this afternoon. Apparently 6 months is only a guideline.

Thanks for the advice!

Re: Whats with all the yelling?

10yrs ago I had a cat do this - I had only ever had older rescue cats so didn't know what it was - I thought she was crying to go out for a wee - so I let her out - big mistake - she became pregnant
As she was very small and young the vet advised having her spayed there and then as to continue the pregnancy would be a big risk
I followed his advice and she was fine and still is
