new kittens - food and poo questions!

Me and my boyfriend have just become the owners of a beautiful pair of moggies - a little fluffy ginger boy and a sleek black girl. They seem to be settling in fine - they're bounding around the place, constantly fighting and playing, then crashing out on the sofa - but as a new cat owner, have a couple of questions.

-how strict should you be about amounts? I have been told that cats won't overeat, and kittens should be fed little and often as they have tiny tummies.

- when cleaning their litter today I noticed a bit of fresh blood in their poo - they seem perfectly healthy, bright eyed and lively and weren't having any trouble going to the loo. Could this be because we started feeding them wet kitten food? They hadn't had it before coming to us but they LOVE it, we feed them 1 pouch a day between them and leave them dry biscuits (got told to feed them go-cat as that's what they had been eating) and water down all day as we're both out at work most days.

Anyway, a little concerned about the blood...? I'll keep a close eye on them over the next few days...

Re: new kittens - food and poo questions!

you can't really overfeed a growing kitten - little and often is great. A swift change-over from one type of food to another can cause poo problems. If it is just a little spot then keep an eye on it and if it continues a vet visit to ease any worries is in order. Go-cat is basically a dry food full of rubbish fillers (you feed it you pay for you cat to poop out about 95% of the contents - so it may seem cheap but it is a waste (no pun intended) in the long term. James Wellbeloved is a good dry food, as is Applaws dry and Orijen, - they will seem more expensive but will last ages and be much better for your kittens. With dry food, it causes a dehydrating effect so make sure there is plenty of fresh watrer and if they don't seem to be drinking enough invest in a water fountain.

Wet food - try to choose a food that is at least 50% meat (again, otherwise those Whiskas and Felix foods are only 4% meat and again you are paying for them to poop out the other 95%) - good wet foods are Natures Menu, Hi-life, Nature (pets@home own brand), Applaws, Tesco's Luxury etc.

Any piccies?

Sorry to go slightly off topic, but I am always looking for good and affordable food for my cat with a skin problem and Tesco's luxury sound's good, could you tell me how much it costs please or a rough idea?

I think it's £3.99 a box of 12.

Re: new kittens - food and poo questions!

We had the same problem with ours - a fresh poop with a little blood spot at the end.

Take them to the vets for a check up, they might need to be wormed again. Ours were wormed then when the problem didnt go we were given a powder for something else, cant remember what for lol, think it was a bacterial thing, as well as worms.

We have also found that being very strict with their food (kitten food and kitten food only, dont let them pinch anything) keep their tummies settled.

If anyone has any other info on the blood thing would be good though, as im not 100% on what it was.

We have been giving our Felix as good as it looks, but turns out its probably not that good at all lol. Think we might switch ours to the PAH stuff. I normally avoid `own brands` as I automatically think they arnt up to scratch. Seems in this case im wrong :-)
