is it bad to give a kitten cat food?

I was just wondering because we got our little man just over a week ago & have realised he's SOOOOO fussy when it comes to food!!

We bought a big bag of hills science plan dry kitten food, it was £17 but we thought, it's better to get him the best....but he wouldn't touch it!!

We then got him whiskas dry kitten food which he likes, & the wet whiskas to go with it....which he doesn't like!!

Then a friend bought him round a "goody bag" of treats and things, also containing kitten food although one of the four was cat food that she picked up by mistake, we gave it to Rio without checking, we assumed that they were all kitten & he LOVED it!! absolutely wolfed the lot down!!

The thing is, it's Tesco finest with only 4% meat

Would you say it's better to try him with another brand with a higher meat content? (if so, could you please recommend one) or, keep him on this cat food....he's only had half a pouch so far but won't eat the whiskas we've put down since

It isn't bad to give a kitten cat food, specially if he doesn't seem to like the kitten food anyway.
My cats eat raw meat, but one of them won't touch this and she gets dry food we get from Zooplus. We get if from the Dutch Zooplus now, but I think the UK site has the same brands on it. Maybe you can send them an e-mail and they can give you some samples you can give your kitten. See what food he likes. The makes we give our cat don't contain grain, since that isn't too good for cats. We give her Arcana, Orijen, Bozita, Sanabelle, Almo nature and Applaws. She loves them all and they have a high meat content. Good luck with your kitten!!

You can sometimes fool your cat into eating stuff by putting a bit of what they do like on top of what you actually want them to eat. It's worth a try, does work now and then.

Thanks for your reply, we've tried this already, he's too clever even though he loves the dry whiskas, if a bit of food that he doesn't like is anywhere near it in his bowl, he'd rather go hungry!! It's all a bit of trial & error....he used to like tuna, not anymore!! are all kittens this fussy?! lol

It's a long time since I've had kittens around but I didn't think they were so fussy or so cunning as to see through our little tricks. Maybe someone else will have some good ideas. I must admit I mostly just give in to my cats and buy whatever they prefer, then they suddenly go off it as cats do and it goes in the garden for the fox.

haha that's exactly what we've done!! probably haven't helped ourselves but because he was underweight & a bit ill when we first got him, we've given him whatever he likes!! there's goodness knows how many boxes & packets of things building up in the kitchen!! i started another thread about how to train a kitten who doesn't like treats because he won't touch those either!!

He's becoming very aloof lol he's turning into a snobby cat!! & he's only 11 weeks, has us wrapped around his little paw!!

Re: is it bad to give a kitten cat food?

I have 2 kittens.. I have Tosca who is 7 months old and Sammy who is 15 weeks old.. Tosca would not touch kitten food when I got him..I have only had Sammy for a couple of days. Hills Science Plan is rubbish even though it is expensive for what it is. I feed both of mine on Natures Menu Cat food pouches. I always buy the variety pack.. I feed them 2 pouches a day and I always leave James Welbeloved biscuits out all day for when they are peckish. I took advice from people from this site and they have really helped me.

I meant to say that Natures Menu is 75% meat and is available from Pets at Home or some pet shops.. My kittens always lick the bowl clean with this food and I must say that Tosca is a very fussy kitten when it comes to food!!!
