Cat With Terminal Illness On Metacam

Hi All

Ted was diagnosed with bone cancer about a month ago. Since then he has a daily dose of Metacam. The original lump we were concerned about has got bigger, and he is finding it harder to use his back legs so has been skipping and hopping.

He has been cleaning, purring, eating, but looks sad sometimes. Although a little off his food this morning, he managed to jump from the floor into the window to catch some sun before!

My Mum is concerned that he is in pain, im not sure...I dont want to put him to sleep before his time and nor do I wish to prolong his life if he is in pain. Obviously if his rear legs gave way, then we would probably pts as it wouldnt be fair on him. We just dont know what to do.

My Dad says that in the morning though, Ted seems a bit more lively...could this be because the Metacam has worn off a bit, were not sure if its building up in his system and making him a bit drowsy.

Its so hard to know what to do, we wish he could talk to, as we dont want to make the wrong decision. Its heartbreaking enough at the moment.

Re: Cat With Terminal Illness On Metacam

Hi,

Sorry to hear about Ted.

Metacam is an anti-inflamatory to help his pain, it shouldn't be making him drowsy. Perhaps you should speak to your vet?

Re: Cat With Terminal Illness On Metacam

unfortunately cats can hide their pain from us so i would ask the vet for some guidance on this.
It is very hard for you and my heart goes out to you.
You are doing your very best for Ted and that, at the end of the day is what matters.
Let me know how you get on.
I will be thinking of you.

I'm so sorry about your Ted
Cats do indeed hide their pain well and I agree that your vet should be able to tell you more about how Ted's doing.
My thoughts are with you.

I can't really add anything more to what has already been said but I just wanted to say sorry about Ted. If it helps they usually will let you know when it's time. But discussing it with your vet would be the best way to go I would think.

Re: Cat With Terminal Illness On Metacam

Thank you all so much. It is so very hard and hearbreaking. Our old cat died about 15 years ago which I dont remember much, so this is so hard.

He is still hobbling round, eating and loving cuddles. But yes, we shall talk to the veta about it. This is the first time iv had to have an active role in deciding when to put an animal to sleep and its awful. At least when he is gone, he will be pain free and all four of his little legs will be running around like a lively little boy!

We are lucky and our vet has said she will come to our home to pts, which is lovely of her. I just cannot imagine him being with us one minute and gone the next.

I shall keep you posted, thank you.

Re: Cat With Terminal Illness On Metacam

That's the worst thing about being an animal lover.
It's nice for your vet to come to your house when the time comes.
Ted will not know what's going to happen, it's only us that know about the future.
He also knows that you adore him and you are doing your best.
Many years ago our Vet came to our house to put our 17 year old to sleep while it was very upsetting to us it was much better for Dougal. 10 minutes before, i had been to the shop and bought him a steak to eat. Which he loved. I didn't want him to go hungry while on his way to the Bridge.
I hope the medication will carry on working for Ted and you can have longer with him.
Take care
