Re: How often do your trim your cats claws!
This has been an interesting post, i honesty thought everyone clipped their cats claws, but it seems that half dont and even some are really against it!
However i will remain clipping their claws as i feel its more beneficial for them to do so (and my couch) thanks guys! |

Re: How often do your trim your cats claws!
About once every 3 weeks. You have to clip their claws when they go to shows or to stud anyway so while it's nice for her claws not to lacerate my flesh when we play, I'm mainly doing it so she's used to it. She hardly notices
Don't have to do the 'bundle in a towel' thing, just lay her back, rub her tummy between clips.

Re: How often do your trim your cats claws!
Indoor cats do need regularly doing, I do them when I hear them click on the wood floor. Doing them when they are zonked out asleep can help if they have clipper aversions.

Re: How often do your trim your cats claws!
Sorry - i genuinly didnt realise that cats claws can ingrow.
I still would only trim them in the case that a cat had a problem with ingrowing claws. Ive had cats all my life and never have any of them had claws trimmed, nor have we ever had any problems. Im still a firm believer that their claws are important to them, unless a health threat. |

Re: How often do your trim your cats claws!
I always have clipped my cats claws - but as another poster said only the very tip (don't go anywhere near to the quick - the pink inner bit - if you do, it will be very painful for your cat and the claw will bleed).
My cats always let me do it while they were on my lap - I used a human nail clipper (the small one for hands) and you cut the claw tip parallel to the floor. That way the claw does not splinter. Very quick and painless, tho I can't say my cats enjoyed it, they accepted me doing it. However I have to some extent changed my mind over clipping - as my previous cats (living to 18) whose claws were clipped regularly - the claws thickened slightly, and eventually remained blunt for longer periods of time. So my attitude now is to clip very seldom, only the very tip, and have lots of cat scratchers around for them to use. My cats were confined to the garden with sadly no trees. If they had access to trees I might have not clipped at all. While a cat is on your lap or when they are asleep, its worth while gently fingering all four paws to check that there is no claws growing into the pads or foreign bits stuck inbetwen the pads (I sometimes dislodged bits of cat litter). |

Re: How often do your trim your cats claws!
Well I just take the tips of my girls every few weeks, I do have proper scissors but I generally just use me nail clippers as there on hand! I had a friend whose elderly cat stopped going out so much, consequently her claws grew, she didnt know about clipping and only reallised there was a problem when the cat couldnt walk. Her claws had grown into the pads and become infected.
