Cats shed claws..theres absolutely no need to trim them and ive never understood why people do. They will never overgrow or ingrow, and the occasional scratch is just what we put up with as cat owners.

Its instinct to sharpen claws on scratch posts etc as they use claws to grip, climb and hunt.

Cats shed the outer covering, the claw underneath continues to grow and they certainly CAN over grow and become in-grown. It's more of a danger for indoor cats, of course.

When they scratch they are not sharpening their claws. They are both marking and helping to loosen the dead outer sheaths. The claw will continue to grow.

Another danger when they get long and sharp is getting hung up on things. Long sharp claws get caught in carpet fabric or upholstery or blankets. Serious injury can result.

In addition, cats can cause serious injury to each other during play, if the claws are too long and sharp.

I clip them every month on all my cats.

They have scratching posts etc. but I still notice them getting a little long every now and again.

i trim sheldons whenever they look like they are gettin long again. like gettin pointy as you describe. i only take the sharp end off and he doesnt mind at all. also means my furniture and legs are ok lol

i check his nails everyday and make sure they are sheddin ok and not broken

I clip them when they get to the stage where play becomes painful! I don't keep track, just when I notice they are sharp I do them. I'm actually good at it now, friends ask me to go round to their house to do their cats Lucky also has a curved claw that needs doing frequently.

Re: How often do your trim your cats claws!

I have never ever trimmed any of my cats claws, and not of them have ever looked like they needing trimming to me, but they have always gone outside don't know if that makes any difference

Being outside cats does make a difference for some cats, depending on how active they are outside, as the nails get worn down while the cats go about their business.

Being in the habit of checking their claws on a regular basis whether cats go out or not is a good idea so that you know what is normal for them, and will notice any problems quickly.

2 of mine have to get them trimmed every now and again as they have grown into the pads before now. the others seem fine, and one of them would probably try to kill me if i attempted to clip his claws!!!
