Cats and Lillies

Im aware that if cats ingest lilly pollen it can be fatal. My boyfriends sister has come to stay for the weekend and bought some flowers as a thankyou...lillies!

Ive put them in the dining room with a polite thankyou and shut the door with the intention of just keeping the cats out until she's gone and i can safely chuck them. I appreciate the thought but do not want poorly fur babies!

Should i just chuck them now and hope she doesnt notice/ask where ive put them!? Might just ensure the dining room is kept shut.

Re: Cats and Lillies

Aw, yes that's true - it's the brown stuff in the middle which I think is the worsest part...

Re: Cats and Lillies

Would you be able to explain to her the reason why? Say you appreciate the gesture and just say why you have thrown them away if you decide to do that?

Re: Cats and Lillies

What about cutting the brown bits out of the middle and throwing them away and leaving the actual flowers?
Would that make them OK?

Re: Cats and Lillies

A friend taught me a great way of removing the middle bits. Use a tissue or kitchen roll over your thumb and first two fingers, insert right into base of flower pince fingers together and pull forward. All the pollen / brown stuff and even the heads of the stamens and stigmas should come away.

Hope that helps x

Re: Cats and Lillies

Theyre not all open yet so cant remove the middles of alot of them, but also found a website saying all parts of the lilly plant is poisonous... im such a panicker when it comes to the cats, paranoid someone will leave the dining room door open by accident.

Re: Cats and Lillies

Well I think you just have to explain the situation. Can you put them in your bedroom or theirs if the cats don't have access?

Yes, all parts are poisonious, but the middle part more so.

Do what I do! When given any flowers I put them in the bathroom and make sure the door is always shut. Thats easy for me though, I live alone. Maybe harder to do in a busy household.

My cats never go in the bathroom anyway....

ps.there are lots of flowers that are toxic to cats!
