Re: can anyone tell me?

Sometimes spaying a cat can help the condition.
We have an ex-queen here that we spayed a few months ago. She was always thin and gangly and scared of other cats. She's now put on weight and is feeling solid and she's looking extremely muscular. This new strength seems to have helped her with her confidence and she now happily shares the front part of the house with two easy going cats.

By the way, you mustn't spay a cat if she is still feeding her young - spaying can dry the milk up.

Re: can anyone tell me?

The cat that we were fostering for the CPL but are now going to keep will be getting spayed when the kittens are 8 weeks old providing that they are fully weaned and she is in good enough condition. This is what I have been advised by the league and the vet. Hope this helps!

OH NO!!!!......now I'm confused.....when I took Gizmo to the vets yesterday when 1 of her kittens' placenta wouldn't deliver, the vet said I should take her back to be spayed as soon as kittens can go a day without her...about 4 weeks she said!!!!

If it helps at all this is the same kind of advice I got from my vet. I will take them (the kittens) for their jabs at 9 wks and if Zelda is in good condition she will be spayed then. I think kittens only begin weaning at 4wks and the Queen needs to recover before a big op.

That doesn't sound right to me! At 4 weeks some kittens may not be eating solids.

Re: can anyone tell me?

My kittens are 5 weeks and only 2 are starting to eat solids. Nala will get done only when the kittens are fully weaned and able to cope without her. Thing is you can't really put Mum back with the kittens after her op incase they pull the stitches so they really have to be able to cope on their own.

Re: can anyone tell me?

Thanks for that guys, I did think it was a bit soon, the vet also said I need to take the kittens for a check-up at 2 weeks of age, is that necessary or are they just trying to get more money out of me????

Re: can anyone tell me?

If you are really worried that the kittens are not gaining weight (average about say 10 g each day) or they are not feeding etc THEN take them to the vet. If they are feeding and growing and mum cat is eating well, no need to take them to the vet.

At the age of 9 weeks when the kittens have their first jabs, then the vet will give them a thorough health examination. You can make the appointment to spay the queen then if she is doing well.

Hope that helps a bit ...

Re: can anyone tell me?

Thanks for that, all 4 kittens seem to be putting on weight, I'll weigh them now and keep a record of it just to make sure, they're all feeding well too.
