Kitten being sick after the snip

Hi, Mario had the snip on wednesday morning, he was fine and running around like mad in the evening, then on thursday evening he was sick. I woke up on friday morning to find he had been sick twice more during the night, then again at about 3pm, he is fine in himself and running around and playing as usual but took him to the vet incase and they gave him an injection of something but said he looked perfectly fine and to give him bland food. But hes been sick twice again in the night. He still looks and is acting fine, anyone have any ideas? He is just over 5 months old. Thanks

Re: Kitten being sick after the snip

I'm not sure what you should do other than keep in contact with the vet about his symptoms and take him back in if you're worrying, but it's important to make sure he's getting enough fluids if he's being sick. (the vet should give you a syringe feeder if he isn't drinking himself.) Out of interest, what food have you got him on? a bit of boiled chicken and rice or decent wet food might be better than biscuits especially while he's needing the fluids
The other thing is (although he does seem to have been sick rather a lot) sometimes cats are quite often sick for apparently no reason. What does it look (and smell) like? The constistency can tell us quite a lot about the health of the cat. If it looks like mostly undigested food and doesn't smell too bad, it's not usually a worry, they often just barf up their tea and eat it later :/ if it's grass and phlegm he may have eaten the grass to make himself vomit as he felt a bit horrid from the drugs. If it smells like poo get him to the vet right away as that could indicate serious problems.
Apparently some cats are just sick for attention which is a particularly revolting habit.
I hope it's nothing serious and your little man feels better soon, I have a brave lil soldier of the same age who had the snip yesterday so *empathy* going your way xx

Re: Kitten being sick after the snip

Thanks so much for your reply

Hes been having chicken and fish since, but ive been leaving the dried (hills) down and thats what his vomit looks like, (undigested biscuits) and it doesnt smell bad. I might take away the biscuits and see what happens. I hope your little guy is ok after his snip! xx

Re: Kitten being sick after the snip

I've never used it myself or looked closely at the ingredients but I've noticed that there are quite a lot of ppl on here who don't rate Hills at all... recommended by vets or not. Also a lot of ppl say that dry food isn't very good for cats as it contains a lot of carbs (mainly cereals) that cats don't need and also they should be getting moisture from their food as they don't drink much naturally. Apparently cats on exclusively dry food are constantly dehydrated.
And I must admit I feed dry food quite often (ours are on Burns Ocean Fish at the minute) and my kits do drink a lot. So while for economic reasons I wouldn't throw away the Hills I think might be good idea as you suggested to leave it out for the moment and maybe reintroduce it bit by bit once he's 100% again; if you're feeding him chicken and fish he's probably getting enough... and of course another reason for cats being sick is overfeeding... cats won't usually over eat but kittens often gulp it down especially if there's other animals in the house (competition). Also as he just had the op on (Thurs?) so I expect he had a fast before it, so I bet he gulped his food down after! Try measuring his food (I blagged a free techni-cal measuring cup from the pet store which guestimates weight of dry food) and feeding at 4 regular mealtimes rather than leaving it down. He's probably just been a bit greedy.
Some other signs to watch out for I think would be if his coat seems unhealthy (parted, lank) if you see a lot of his third eye, if his breathing seems too fast or irregular. Don't be embarrassed to ring the vet and ask "silly" questions, we pay them enough as it is and you're their valued client. But if as you say he seems fine (and I'm sure you know your kitten) then I reckon he probably is xx

Re: Kitten being sick after the snip

Oh dear hope he's ok..
When I took Harry in the nurse gave me some free samples of Royal Canin that was particularly suited to a young neutered male. There were many different types for different ages and stages and she mentioned that the male post-neuter stuff was suitable for both but the female stuff didn't contain the right nutrients for the post-neuter male...
Anyway I'm not promoting the brand particularly but what it did make me think is our lil boys' nutritional needs have probably changed almost instantly with the changing hormone levels and so maybe the diet which been working fine for him before may suddenly be too much.

I wish someone else would come and post on this thread and give you some better advice than I can! We've been a bit abandoned..

Re: Kitten being sick after the snip

OK I asked my mum (who is a very experienced Cat Lady) about your situation and she thinks that your problem could well be mixing the biscuits with the meat/wet food. She has a 19 yr old tom who while otherwise healthy for his age, started bein sick after every meal (undigested food with no unpleasant smell, just like yours) and she now doesn't give him the biccies at the same time as the wet food or other food. The biscuits swell in the stomach with water and digest at a different rate to meat and she says that for Bogart it works better to feed him exclusively wet food for breakfast, then leave down the biccies during the day she has to go out and then feed him wet only for tea.... whereas the others in her tribe can have biccies and wet food at the same time for all their meals. She says he's all but stopped doing it with this routine.
I think a lot of ppl like to mix the biscuits with the meat as it looks like more appetising a meal to us... Mum says "yes but you don't mix your pudding with your meat, or your cereal with your toast". I guess she has a point.
She also suggested to try doing this with the Hills for a week, then with the JWB for a week, so you can see if there's any difference and if either one of those are causing the problems.
Hope it helps x

Re: Kitten being sick after the snip

Dunno if you've ever heard of the Hay diet - (for people) - they eat protein only one day and carb only the next- supposed to allow the body to digest food better. Now while cats aren't really supposed to eat carbs there are carbs in the biscuits so lets consider them to be the carb meals- and they do "bulk up" in the tummy like slimfast so it stands to reason to try and make sure that he waits at least a few hours between meal types so he can digest things properly. I know with a BARF diet it takes a particularly long time to digest so if I feed raw I feed it for breakfast (or all day) rather than after biscuits as I'm pretty sure it'd cause problems, at the very least flatulent animals!.
