Help :( ..my poor persian kittens have diarrhea

Hello..

I have 2 persian kittens which are 14 weeks old and they have diarrhea which i couldn't stop..
i've been givin them (persian 34) dry food by Royal canin...and when i took them to bad vet he told me that i should not deprive them from meat (wet food) as they like it then i did what he told me for 3 days and that made the diarrhea worse..and since 3 days i've been feeding them the dry food again but they still have it..Is that contageous?

Any suggestions?

thnx

You should take them back to the vet for another checkup.

The vet is right in that they need meat, and that dry food is bad for them.

Try feeding only raw or cooked chicken (boiled, no bones, no spices) for three days and see if that helps. If it does, then it's clear that they're sensitive to dry food and need to have wet food only. Good brands are HiLife pouches, Bozita, Applaws kitten - all these are wet foods with more than 50% meat.

Hope that helps.

Yes, agree with Coraline about feeding wet food with a high meat content, or a balanced raw diet, definitely no dry (or just a small amount as a treat maybe - but again go for a dry that is high meat/low carb, such as Applaws or Orijen).

Cats are meant to eat the carbohydrates that are in most dry foods and some wet foods - persians in particular are intolerant of carbs - mine were, and now they have mainly raw with some of the wet foods that Coraline mentioned.

I also agree about just getting them checked over again at the vets - to rule out parasites etc and he might recommend a probiotic supplement that could help with the diarrhea.

When you make any food changes remember to do it gradually to avoid tummy upsets.

Re: Help :( ..my poor persian kittens have diarrhea

i have fed dry food as the main diet successfully for years,i use royal canin, pro plan and iams,i occasionally feed hilife, and wean kittens onto this.wet food is much more likely to cause diareahh than the dry,due to its high water content.Have the kittens been wormed to date??? i would see a different vet next time

Wet food is no more likely to cause diarrhoea than dry food, in fact the reverse is often true. The high water content of wet food is much better for cats, as they are designed to get most of their moisture from their food (they don't have much sense of thirst). Cats fed solely on dried food are in a constant state of dehydration.

Re: Help :( ..my poor persian kittens have diarrhea

Are the kittens ill, ie sleepy and inactive, if so take to vet. If they are fine in themselves I would think food intollerance and feed them cooked chicken for couple of days is this is very bland. Then gradually (by mixing small amount in with the cooked chicken) over a couple of days change them onto good quality wet food such as Hi-Life Kitten pouches. I would think the reason they got worse was because of sudden change from dry to wet food ... changes need to be made gradually with kittens.

In my experience (had a persian many years ago) water was the culprit with his tummy upset. As soon as I started giving him boiled and cooled water from the kettle he was fine.

Hope things improve soon

With it being the two of the kittens suffering from diarrhea, I would have suspected feline enteritis, which is indeed contagious. And very dangerous and potentially life threatening to the kittens.

What did your vet say? Was it diet related or enteritis?

And yes, everyone has a different opininon when it comes to diet Follow the advice your vet has given you!

Personally, when kittens are as ill as this, raw is not the best thing to recommend imo. As it requires ALOT of research to do it right (taurine levels in certain cuts etc), and in a sick kitten not the best idea due to dangers in feeding raw meat. Though can see the reasoning behind it.....To eliminate dietary issues causing the diarrhea.

So glad your little ones are on the mend, and thanks for updating us all on their situation. (Sorry, just noticed this thread). x
