Oscar at vet tomorrow (nothing urgent)

Oscar is due at the vet tomorrow for his annual vaccination and check up. The only thing that has worried me is that he sounds like he has a respiratory infection again, I don't know why he keeps getting them, they've checked him for HiV to ensure that it wasn't an underlying factor.

I hope he hasn't got another because he's a bugger for taking tablets, really is, I end up half clawed to death whilst he struggles to get out of my arms when he realises what is coming up for him heheh, when he needs a worming tablet I make the vet do it rofl

We have starved him as per usual (the trip to the vets causes him to poop himself so we have to starve him so that it's not quite so messy) he poops on the way there and then tries to poop on the way back too, I'm guessing he doesn't like either the car, or the carrier. I would try just holding him but if I accidentally let him go we'd have rather an accident on our hands. It's bad enough trying to get him to go in the carrier heheh.

Well, wish me luck, we have to be there at 10am tomorrow so at least we have a 30 minute time where we can struggle to get him in the carrier (between when the children go to school and when we have to get in the car) I might try brute force again, but I get ripped to pieces when I try that so maybe gentle coaxing is first on the cards. Can't put treats in there because we don't want him to have extra stuff to poop out! lol

Hopefully all will go sailing along.

Re: Oscar at vet tomorrow (nothing urgent)

If you can (might be too late for this visit) get some Feliway spray and spray his basket 10 mins before you put him in. It helps my boy who does the same otherwise.

Pill wise - have you tried wrapping him up tightly in a big towel put him between your knees or hold tioghtly in arms.and then (this is a two man job really) one person scruffs him quite hard (but not hurting) and tips his head right back and the other quickly oens his mouth and shoves the pill in a far as he can. Sounds rough but it gets it done very quickly, with minimal fuss and hurts neither cat nor human slave.

Re: Oscar at vet tomorrow (nothing urgent)

I forgot to come back to this post and let you all know how he got on sorry.

Firstly even though we starved him for 48 hours he still poohed on the way to the vets, and pee'd himself too, what a smelly journey it was, same place as well, meaning same place on the journey not in carrier/car.

Vet gave him his annual boosters and checked his ears, eyes, nose, skin, tummy, weight etcetc and then his mouth, he has gingivitis AGAIN, the vet said that the only way to prevent it is to clean his teeth, but he's NOT going to let us do that so he said that if it gets much worse and he stops eating he'll have to lose his teeth!!! :O you can imagine how shocked I was to find that was what they do.

Hopefully with his dentabits (whiskas teeth cleaners) having 8 a day as it says on the pack, it will take his gingivitis away, so far he's not been put remotely off his biscuits or soft food that we give him as treats though so hopefully we'll avoid the teeth pulling operation. :S

He didn't poop or pee on the way home thankfully and his poop that he DID do on the way was solid so he was only pee stained when he got home, so I let him clean himself up instead of stressing him out further getting him soaked and washing his back legs myself.

Bless him, I'm definitely going to get some feliway and try it, the vet said it works with some cats and with others it does nothing so we just have to try it and see. It saves him getting all worked up, little man was panting like mad by the time we actually got there (it wasn't hot in the car, we had it just right for him, until he pooped then I had to open the window I'm afraid lol)

So there we go, a long winded update

Re: Oscar at vet tomorrow (nothing urgent)

Gosh, that story really made me appreciate how good I've got it with my cat! The only thing he does is make little rrrrrrrriaaaoowww noises once in a while, and sweat through his paw pads once he gets on to the vet's table

I just wanted to recommend trying raw chicken wings, and plaque off, and logic gel for his teeth - easier then brushing! And probably gentler on both of you

Good luck, and I hope he won't have to have any teeth out

Re: Oscar at vet tomorrow (nothing urgent)

Poor Oscar he really stresses about the vets

My two are only 7 months but have been there about a dozen times now so are quite used to it. When I first got them I used to take them for little rides in the car in their carriers to get them used to car travel. That way they never know if they are going to vet or just on a pointless journey. Lol

Surprised your vet didnt suggest giving Oscar's teeth a clean polish for you though.
