what to do in this situation?

hiya

I have just took on my grandads cat, as unfortunately he is not well enough to look after him any more.
He is a male shorthair, about 6 years old, and quite timid tho will allow you to handle him, and loves affection.

After collecting him at the weekend, i noticed a terrible stench coming from his mouth..... it smelt like death, no word of a lie!
Anyhow, obviously something wasnt right so had him looked at by a vet, who said it was gum disease, and needs a couple of teeth out and deep clean. I asked for a estimate of the cost and it came out at around £200.

Now on my budget, as im not working at the moment, its a little bit out of reach as a lump sum.
Now I dont know what to do, I couldnt stand to send him to a rehoming centre, just because i couldnt find £200 to fix his teeth, but what options have I got?
I want him to get his teeth done as soon as possible, as it must be so uncomfortable, but it would take me a while to save up.

If I had to rehome him, would they let him stay at mine untill they could find him a home, or would he have to stay at their shelter?
This is so sad.

Have you discussed a payment plan with your vet?
Some of them will let you pay a bill off over an agreed time.

Hiya If you're not working and receive Housing Benefit or Council Tax Benefit you should contact your local PDSA branch where they will treat kitty for a donation.

Yes, I agree with Lilbird, definitely have a chat with your vet about paying by instalments, as it does sound like he really needs his mouth sorting out asap. Have you got an amount you could offer to pay right now, and then do the rest by instalments?

Absolutely this is good advice, it also applies if you're on income support, jsa or in some cases just on a low income. Some vets are registered with the PDSA, the others you may be able to get some help from the RSPCA. It is also possible that your local Cat's Protection league would help but I would expect that under the circumstances one of the first two would help you with at least half of the sum and your vet should let you pay £10 or £20 a week off any outstanding amount if you ask.

Re: what to do in this situation?

Aber just had 3 teeth out at the weekend, they quoted us £200ish and it was only £150. It's really important that it is done asap as he could be in a lot of pain and it could cause more problems the longer you leave it.

As the others suggested I would speak to the vet and see if you can pay in instsllments. I hope it works out for you

Re: what to do in this situation?

I would suggest having a chat with your grand father and other family to help towards the bill.

Speak to the PDSA who can help towards vet bills and also your vet about a payment plan which most do allow.

It's not fair to re-home him because he needs treatment, rescue centre's have enough to deal with already.
