Teeth

What is the best way to ensure that Dorrie has good dental health? Do I brush them for her? Can you get products to do this with?

Re: Teeth

I would make sure they get plenty of dry food in their diet as well as wet food.

Re: Teeth

Yes, I'd second the chicken wings. You could also back that up with Plaque Off which is a seaweed based supplement that helps to prevent plaque build up. Plaque Off --- Petremedies

Unfortunately dry food does nothing for the teeth, in fact it can contribute to dental problems. For a start some cats don't crunch - they just swallow it whole, therefore no effect whatsoever on the teeth! Even if they crunch it doesnt help clean teeth the biscuit shatters on contact and just leaves a whole load of debris around the teeth and gums.

Re: Teeth

It's the bones that help with the cleaning- but they must be raw, not cooked.
Also the saliva they produce to digest raw food helps to break down plaque.
The Plaque Off is great stuff but you can't use it on cats that have thyroid problems or pregnant or lactating queens.
You could also try the homeopathic remedy Fragaria- given once a week helps to prevent the build up of plaque in the first place.

Oh right, I didn't know that. You read so often that dry food is good for their teeth that you just end up believing it (though after reading your post it did occur to me that all my cats have ended up fairly toothless in old age, so dry food didn't do them all that much good). I'll start using chicken wings, myself (always been a bit nervous of giving them anything with bones in, which is daft really when they are quite capable of killing birds and mice and eating practically every last bit).

Re: Teeth

As has already been said, chicken wings are great, but the cat needs to chew through the bone to make that useful for teeth cleaning and some simply won't do that.

If Dorrie is young, it wouldn't do any harm to introduce her to having her teeth brushed, that way you can make sure that all surfaces of her teeth, including those right up the back are clean. The pet toothbrushes are often way to big, but a cheap my first toothbrush designed for babies some makes have tiny heads and nice soft bristles so are ideal. For toothpaste use a enzymatic paste, something like Logic Gel. It contains enzymes to help break down plaque. It works even if just taken orally, but are best brushed on for a full affect.

Thats what happpened with mine and sadly it meant that most of them now can't manage to eat whole bones, although they make a good job of tearing the meat off the bone!
