Virus
Our 6 year old Siamese boy,Coco, died earlier this week.
The first diagnosis from the vet when he first saw him was tonsilitis but after some anti biotics his condition did not improve. He was then admitted to the vets "hospital" but gradually became weaker and in the end had no fight. I asked the vet what caused his untimley passing and he remarked it may have been herpes virus. He had only recently had his annual innoculation but it did no good in this instance.Have any other owners experienced this with their cats? Needless to say we are devastated at losing him. |

Re: Virus
Very sorry to hear this, Coco was far to young to leave.
I would think it very unlikely that herpes virus would kill a 6 yr old vaccinated cat who had up to now been in good health (i presume he had?) Herpes can kill unvaccinated kittens but adults generally recover although they may have recurrences from time to time. Herpes usually causes at least a runny eye and often sneezing. Did he have any symptoms other than "tonsilitis"? Was a blood test done? It seems to me that the vet did not fully investigate the problem. I know Siamese do suffer various inherited problems, (as do other pedigree breeds), perhaps this had something to do with it? Have you spoken to Coco's breeder to find out if any of his siblings or relatives have died at such a young age? i hope you find some answers. Quote:

Re: Virus
Thank you for your kind words.
Coco started by showing signs of breathing problems so we took him immediately to the vet. After a few days his condition was not improving so he was taken in by the vet.He undertook blood tests and we were naturally concerned that they might have shown kidney problems(having lost our prevuous Siamese to this)but this was clear. The vet did everything possible to save our baby but having not eaten properly lost his strength to fight the virus. |

Re: Virus
I agree with Kozykatz about herpes, I doubt it was that. If he had breathing problems then there are a few things it could possibly be, but none of those could be diagnosed without a necropsy. My guess (unprofessional) would be something to do with his heart because of the breathing problems. A friends cat died suddenly of heart failure at around the same age. His only symptoms up until that point had been breathing a bit too deeply, which was diagnosed as mild asthma. He went down hill suddenly, and died on the way to the vets. He had been to the vets for regular check ups and there was never an audible problem with his heart. The same with his relatives my friend also had, but scans showed they all had the same heart malformation to a lesser or greater degree. There does seem to be a lot of heart issues in the breed, but not really recognised. The other things that hit siamese become evident at a younger age.
I am very very sorry to hear about Coco, he was taken from you far too young.
