Scabby Cat

Hi

Our 2-year old indoor tabby started developing small wounds a couple of months ago that then began to scab over. The vet thought it may be an allergy and gave him an injection that cleared it up for few weeks but then the scabs returned.

I took him back and he rather annoyingly gave him the same injection again...with the same result that a few weeks later the scabs were back. He suggested we remove things like air freshners and pot plants and also try changing the food.

The first two actions made no difference but we've switched him from Whiskas to Hills and this seems to have made a world of difference. The scabs are almost gone so we're going to stick with Hills for the timebeing.

Has anybody had similar experiences?

Re: Scabby Cat

whiskas and other cheaper supermarket brands contain lots of colourings and presevatives, and are high in cereals, not meat.this can cause allergic reactions in some cats, glad its cleared up

Re: Scabby Cat

My cat Gypsy had scabs and she actually had a reaction to flea bites so I put her on frontline, advantage is the same and after two months she was back to normal. She has to have it every month or the sores come back, self inflicted from her itching.
Maybe thats what your cat has

Re: Scabby Cat

I don't think it is flees as we do Frontline him regulaly but we're definitely not going back to Whiskas - this has given us the kick up the backside we needed to take him off it!

We wouldn't feed our dog Pedigree so there's no excuse for not buying good stuff for the cat as well.

Incidentally what do people recommend for indoor cats that isn't high in artifical ingredients?

Re: Scabby Cat

Hi My Maine coon girl had this problem at first the vet said flea allergy but has you i use frontline so they gave her an injection. 3 times i took her back with this problem. I decided to change her food from Royal Cannin to Hills and i had no problems since she must have developed an allergy to the food or they changed some ingreediants. she has been fine now for over a year.
