I wasnt having a go at the OP

Just pointing out that raw feeding isnt a guessing game, i feed raw (and without supplements too!!!!!) - i know how much work i put into making sure my cats have a balanced diet with the correct levels of nutrients.

I definitely agree with you. So many people do it wrong, have problems then blame the diet. I do not supplement either, and my dogs do fab on it

I'm now so worried about getting it wrong that I'm considering just feeding the best commercial I can find! My last 2 moggies lived to a ripe old age on it!

Buy it ready made up from places like Food4cats and you can't go wrong - no supplements needed just defrost and serve.

Re: Basic rules for feeding raw combined with good quality commercial please

I do have some stuff from food4cats (rabbit defrosting as we speak). I wasn't aware that it contained all the supplements required too? It looks like mush to me and I thought I was doing a good thing by buying them "proper" meat.

I would like to make my own at some point though and will follow the recipes on feline instincts tc (now that I know I'm looking at the right site)

It has everything in it - all supplements etc are included - you don't need to add anything else. The tubes are roughly minced meat (so the cats still have to chew) - including the correct proportions of muscle meat, organ meat and bone and vits etc. They also do chunks of stuff - rabbit chunks and now also I believe tongue chunks.

Cool - thank you. I'll stock up on a bit more food from them until I've learned more about it all.

Thanks so much everyone for your help/comments.

Re: Basic rules for feeding raw combined with good quality commercial please

Other thing is.....our Maine Coon had bladder crystals at about 15 wks old and has been on a dry diet ever since (as recommended by vet). I'm going to ask the vet about changing his diet.

Anyone with experience of diet & crystals?

They should have some 'proper' meat too - chicken wings/things to clean the teeth; chunks of meat to provide more interest. Heart is a great favourite with mine and one of the kittens started playing with a piece a few days ago as if it was prey! I feed Prize Choice mince at the moment so mine do need a little organ meat (kidney, liver) once or twice a week as well.
