Constipated kitten

My kittens had been sick for a few days and we were syringe feeding them milk a few times a day for about 3 days.

Yesterday they seemed a lot better in themselves and started eating the prescription kitten food the vet gave us which is just like chicken flavour in a gravy and also some poached chicken. We still tried to give them some milk last night as I hadnt seen them drink much in the day.

I think one of them hasnt pooped for over 24 hours now. Its now gone from having bad runs to nothing! He does keep getting in the tray and obviously wants to go but nothings coming out.

Any advice on what I can do to get this kitty to poo???

If they aren't drinking much you could try mixing a little bit of water into their wet food

Re: Constipated kitten

There are several different cat laxatives suggested in this thread Constipation on raw diet which I think might be of interest to you. The most popular ones include a teaspoon of cod liver oil over their food, pilchards in tomato sauce, and raw fish in olive oil. I haven't tried any of these myself since my kittens have never been constipated, but they have all proven successful for other forum members.

However, cats on a raw diet sometimes go as long as 2-3 days without emptying their bowels, so 24 hours is not a particularly long time. It could be that the prescription kitten food has a particularly high meat content, and since you are feeding them poached chicken as well, perhaps they simply don't need to go yet? Sometimes my kittens sit in the litter tray and dig around just for play.

Good luck

Re: Constipated kitten

i would guess its the milk formula that is constipating them,if they are on kitten food they dont need it anymore.

Re: Constipated kitten

Ring the vet's & ask their opinion, too risky to mess around with their lil tums.
