Question Weepy eye following cat flu...

Hello all,

When we rehomed our youngest cat (now 2 years ago) we were told she had cat flu which she was then recovering from. To begin with she had to have eye drops for a couple of weeks to clear up an infection in her right eye. Although the infection has gone away, she is still left with a quite poorly eye. The vet told us that it will never be perfect and will appear to her like looking through a frosted window

I was wondering if anyone new of anything that could ease it, maybe for a few days at a time?? It's constantly weepy, and she gets in a bit of a mess sometimes. We bought some eye wipes from Pets at Home (which she hates!!) but these only take away the mess temporarily. Its particularly poor looking today, and her eye is half closed.

Do you think she is bothered by it, or just something she puts up with? I feel bad becuase we can't make it better for her

Re: Weepy eye following cat flu...

I have seen this a lot over the years, and as your Vet says, its often there for life.

If it gets excessive, then a visit to the Vet is needed, as bacteria can get in, and cause minor infections that need to be treated.

For the everyday weeping, then a quick swipe with cotton wool, dampened in tepid (pre boiled ) water, will keep it clean.

Cats who clean the eye constantly can end up with 'rust' marks on the side of the front legs from the staining of these tears.

Re: Weepy eye following cat flu...

Thank you, I think maybe it has got infected recently as it does seem worse than it has been before. Think I'll nip her to the vets. Thanks for your advice

Same problem with my husband's elderly cat, who still has a weepy eye at thirteen. I agree that wiping with cotton wool dampened with preboiled lukewarm water is a great help in preventing eye infection, though for Toto it's best to just do it occasionally, and then gently dab dry with some dry cotton wool.

Re: Weepy eye following cat flu...

Thanks everyone, I think I'm going to try the boiled water and cotton wool technique as I think the eye wipes are a bit harsh.
