Kitten Vaccinations

HI Guys,

Im new to owning Kittens and they are due for their injections in the next week or so.

They are being kept indoors but may well have exposure to other animals throughout their lives such as my sisters dog when she stays.

I have been researching and found out loads of arguments for an against vaccinations.

One of my kittens was recsued by my sister so came to me in a bad way with cat flu which she was treated for.

So it is out of the question for my cats to not have their vaccinations.
However Im keen to know whether they need them every year as some people say every 3 years if they are indoors?

Re: Kitten Vaccinations

Trouble is some virus can be brought in on people being around other cats . Also theres always a risk of escapees as cats are brill at it. I suppose its personal choice , i have mine done as there may always a time if you should end up having to put them in a cattery or with someone else with cats if you were poorly or something i just know mine are covered. After seeing the state of a freinds after contracting the cat flu and he nearlly died i feel myself that it is better to have them vaccinated and be safe than sorry. Although some may not agree.

Re: Kitten Vaccinations

I completely understand the risks, as I said Tansy came to me on deaths door with catflu - she could barely open her eyes!

I just wanted to make sure that every year was the best thing for them as I keep reading about tumours on injection sites and how you can give cats an overload of vaccines and all sorts!

With Tansy having a bad start in her life I want to make sure im doing right by her and ofcourse Mitzi.
Also they are now 8 weeks old and 9 weeks old.

Is it crucial that they have their injections this week or can it wait 2 weeks?
Aswell as that I have orderd drontal wormer and flea treatment to treat them myself - is this okay - anything I should know?

Thanks so much - YOu can tell im new!

If you are concerned you can always talk to you vet as they will have a better idear of health issues. Ihave also heard of cats that are indoors not having there jabs yearly but every other year. But id talk to your vet. Im sure your do right by your cat you obvisuosly love Tansy to bits. xxx

Re: Kitten Vaccinations

Sullivan is right.. it is personal choice really, but you can still put them at risk by bringing a virus into the home on shoes, etc.

Plus catteries wont accept a non vaccinated cat.

Vaccinations are done at 9 weeks and 12 weeks, usually, but you can start any time after that, the important thing is not to wait more than 3 weeks in between, and no mixing of vaccines..

Flea and worming, well as the dosages etc depend on weight with worming, its a good idea to start this by getting the Vet to weigh them.

Once the growth period has slowed down a bit, then treat yourself, should you wish to.

It they are going to be indoors I'd only do the cat flu and enteritis (panleuk), they won't need the FelV vaccine and thats the one most often assocatiated with tumours.

this is what we decided on for our kittens as we plan to keep them indoors and our vet agreed with us
