Strange scab that keeps growing - advice needed

Hello folks,

A while ago, we took in a cat. The owner (a neighbour) had passed away and it needed a new home.

We noticed at the time that it had a scab just above its eye, and that over a few days, it seemed to grow. The cat does seem to notice it's presence, as if it's touched, she judders (like when you taste something really bitter).

As the scab grew, we decided to try and pull it off. The cat didn't mind us doing this one bit, and in fact purred constantly throughout the whole process.

Even after pulling the dry, crusty parts off, there was a dark lump underneath.

Over the next few days, the scab grew back. We decided to leave it this time, and it grew really large - so big you could actually see the top of it protruding through the fur.

We took the cat to the vet, who didn't seem that concerned with this, and had no real clue as to what it might be.

This has been going on now for many months. The cat doesn't seem bothered one bit unless the scab is touched. She's otherwise healthy, and behaving like a normal cat (sleeping, eating, playing etc).

We're not sure how old she is, our neighbours estimate she's about 11 years old.

I've tried to take some photo's of the affected area, but its not easy as its under the fur. I've included a shot of the bits we pull off as well.

If anyone has any idea what this could be, we'd really appreciate it.

Thanks,

MJ

Hi its probably just a cyst, older animals tend to develop lumps and bumps, usually these are harmless,of course sometimes they are malignent.

Interesting! Did the vet not think it could be ringworm? Or a 'rodent ulcer' (not much connected to rodents)?

Did the vet give you a course of anti-biotics when you took the cat to get checked over?

It could be all manner of things, I really believe another vets visit is in order

And please could you not pick at the scab, you could introduce infection to the sore area, and make matters worse

You could bath the area with sterile salty water in the meantime.

It must hurt when cat tries to groom her face, or rubs it against something and eventually could get infected. Vets visit as soon as possible!

Good luck.....

I have to agree with others who have said, another visit to the Vets is needed. Did the Vet not use a Woods Lamp on this? ( ultraviolet )

You need to set a vet really! could be pretty harmless as SB&S's suggests ! on the other hand it could be something more sinister! am assuming it is not an old war wound of course!

Re: Strange scab that keeps growing - advice needed

Thanks for all your suggestions.

The vet was totally dis-interested to be honest. Not what I was expecting.

We've had cats for the past thirty years or so (most lived into their twenties) so we're familiar with most of their ailments.

Despite what you may think, the crusty growth doesn't bother or hurt the cat at all - which is strange.

We're going to leave it alone for a while, and see what happens. We'll then head back to the vets and hope we get someone different this time.

Thanks again for your suggestions, will read up on them all.
