Calici Virus

We have rescued a cat that has calici virus although the only sign of this disease is gingivitis does anyone have a cat with this virus please? Do you know if catteries will take cats in that have this virus? Any other help/advice would be most appreciated.

Re: Calici Virus

Try not to worry too much, it clears very quickly and the cat will then be free of symptoms. They can continue to shed the virus for some months though. I am assuming you have a definite diagnosis?

Re: Calici Virus

Gingivitis can be present for any number of reasons, one of which is calici. However, does seem to be vets stock diagnosis, unless tests have been carried out to confirm that, its just their best guess.

Re: Calici Virus

I would agree with what has been said above. Calici can flare up in times when the cat is under stress and to the best of my knowledge catteries would look after a cat with calici. That said, why not check your local area for a reputable pet sitter rather than risk the stress of your pet.

Re: Calici Virus

Thanks to all of those that have replied to my questions so far about Calici Virus, I am new to Pets Forum and so apologies if I haven't got the hang of it yet!!! Yes, we have a definite diagnosis from a swab test taken by a vet and sent to a laboratory. Oscar, who has gingivitis, is full of beans, eating well and shows no other signs of the virus. We have 5 other feral cats we rescued too and the vet said to 'assume' they all have the virus or are immune. Our 6 cats include a mother and her litter of 3, Oscar who is the 'cuckoo' of the litter, and Phoebe who we believe is from Evi's previous litter. She is the only other cat that is showing any 'possible' signs of the virus - she has a weepy eye although it is not infected and the vet is not concerned. Many cattery web sites state they will not take cats that are 'infectious' and, ideally, we would prefer to use a cattery when we are away.
