twisted hind legs

Hi

Last Monday one of our cats had 4 kittens, all bar 1 are perfectly healthy, the other has both hind legs twisted. We took her to the vet on tuesday in order to get her a once over and make sure there was nothing else wrong with her (as her little face is kinda smushed in) but the vet was only concerned about her legs, and if it wasn't for me mentioning to the vet that I knew about physiotherapy she would have said to have her put to sleep.

I'm wondering if anyone else has come across this as I'm finding it difficult to administer the physio to her as she's so small. I have been looking up bracing the hind legs as shown here - Bracing To Correct Twisted Hind Legs but I can't find anywhere that shows the construction of the brace.

Any and all help will be appreciated as we really don't want to put her to sleep

Many Thanks

Re: twisted hind legs

hi Clare

Compared to some pictures I have seen of twisted legs, hers aren't too bad, but according to the vet we saw hers were bad (but then again, it's common for vets to say the problem is worse than it actually is, as I said she would have said to have her put down if I didn't mention physio)

sorry for the picture quality

we have considered quality of life, but we are torn in our decision by what we have researched

Re: twisted hind legs

Oh, no, poor little mite. My friends cat had 7 kittens a couple of weekes ago and sadly only 2 survived, the ones that died, all had twisted limbs and kinked tails 1 of the survivors had twisted legs too. The other is fine. She is just massaging ect, I think so far it's doing fine Not heard about bracing legs on kittens. What about some lolly sticks, or something small like that, snapped down, with the snapped edges sanded a bit so no sharp bits dig into it's little legs ect.. Then cut up a bandage, to secure it. Looks like what they've done on that picture

Re: twisted hind legs

Has she got normal joints??its a hard one i know you must be torn but its gonna be a lot for a little kitty to go through, probably painful aswelli would hate to be in your position.I agree about the vets, especially if they are young and newly appointed they do like to be dramatic!a second opinion with a senior partner may be worthwhile.I know cats can live perfectly happy with one limb removed, but two just wouldnt be possible.

Re: twisted hind legs

I suppose the vets point is, that if you tried to help and it did'nt work, you are left with the upset of putting to sleep a kitten you have bonded with. Very hard decission, as Clare said I would hate to be in your position at the minute, as I would be like you and want to see if I could do something about it.

Re: twisted hind legs

Vet recons her joints are normal, it's just the tendons are over contracted/overstreched and are pulling the legs out of position.

Re: twisted hind legs

I have heard that those sorts of legs correct themselves. Gentle massage can help but they come right in the end. There is an article on the net somewhere, I will see if I can find it.
