cat not eating liver problem

hi all

im new here i have 2 cats fluffy and phoebe both 10-phoebe over the past few days stopped eating so i took her to the vet who diagnosed liver problems but are doing more extensive tests-they kept her in yesterday to rehydrate her and give her meds but today shes still not eating

the results dont come back till friday but im worried as i thought she would perk up by now

the vet said it could also be thryoid problems im not asking for a medical opinion just if anyone has had same situation and did your cat start eating again?

thanks

Re: cat not eating liver problem

Depending on what is diagnosed she probably still doesn't feel too good. Either that or she is associating feeling very bad with eating.

Has the vet given any advice about diet ? Is there anything she should avoid ? Taking that into account, as smell is a huge part of taste for a cat, extra smelly things can help get an appetite going. Try a bit of roast chicken, the hot chickens from Tescos go down well here, drained sardines - Sainsburys do skinless boneless ones in olive oil, cooked fresh mackerel - quite smelly whilst cooking, veal has a good savoury smell. It you can get her eating a bit that usually is just the kick start they need. If it is because she associates food with feeling ill, then it needs to be a food she hasn't tasted before.

If you can not tempt her then you will have to probably resort to syringing her for a while so at least she is getting something. You can A/D from the vets, that can just be mixed with a little warm water and it turns into a syringable paste.

Re: cat not eating liver problem

Sorry for what you're going through with Phoebe.

I guess you're not getting much response because there's no way of sugar coating how serious this is. Cats are not like us and cannot survive long without eating, their livers cannot cope with the lack of food.

See here:

Feline Hepatic Lipidosis

You will have to try and force feed your cat even though it's distressing.

You'll need to discuss with your vet what's best for Phoebe, I just thought you should go prepared and ready with some questions.

Re: cat not eating liver problem

My first lovely big boy Muffin, who sadly died 18 yrs, when he was going down hill, stopped eating, the vet said to get some fish (from the fish shop) feed it without the batter, we all knew he was passing over, but none of us wanted to see him thin, as he was a hunky chunky lad. He ate it with gusto, wouldn't eat anything else, sort of gave me hope but vet's said, he still didn't have long.
What I'm trying to say is try & feed anything (try the fish) don't let him forget why he need's food.
