I think my new kittens are ill.

Rocky and Sapphire are half brother and sister.

Sapphire (14weeks old) seems to be a lot bigger. She appears to be a good size and weight. However Rocky (12weeks old), seems small and too thin. When I stroke him I can feel his ribs.

They are both eating and using the litter tray well. I have dry food out all the time - James well beloved... and I started with - Hi Life wet pouch since yesterday, which they seem to like.

They have both been sneezing since I first brought them home.

I cleaned some crusty bits from the corner of both of their eyes with a wet cotton bud.
I'm not sure but I think Rocky has a tiny bit of crusty bits around his nose too.

I am taking them into the vets for their first vet check since coming to live with me.... So I hope they are okay.

Sending lots of hugs to you

Hopefully they are okay and maybe it is the stress of moving that has triggered something off in Rocky. No doubt lots of love and car will bring him back to normal.

Re: I think my new kittens are ill.

Firstly did they have a chlamydia jab? This can give them a bit of a cold and runny (not crusty eyes), secondly Birmans do tend to gather crustiness in the corner of their eyes due to the shape of their face, just wipe it away. Minnii hates having her eyes done but it is needed.

If they are sneezing and have runny noses they could have a small bit of cat flu - they can still get a mild dose even when vacinated - the stress of moving can set this type of thing off. If you are worried or they get worse a quick pop tot he vets would be worthwhile. WHen we got Mnnii she had horrid eyes, caused by the chlamydia jabs and the stress of an 8 hour journey to get to us, poor lass.

It might be that Rocky isn't too keen on dry food (sensible cat IMHO), I always feel you can't really overfeed kittens at this point they are growing so quickly. I'd give him more of the wet to encourage him to eat and put on a bit of weight, as the boy he should really be the bigger of the two even at this age. Just noticed that Rocky is only 12 weeks (he shouldn't have been sold on until 13 weeks to comply with GCCF guidelines) - when was his last jab? Ah, but noticed on the website that breeder only registers individual cats on request.

Let me know how you get on.

They've had 2 vaccinations each, but I don't know exactly what for. The 2 labels under their primary vaccination details both say PUREVAX RCP MERIAL.

I'm taking them to see the vets anyway today for the first time for an initial check up and advice on microchipping, neutering etc. So I'll see what they say.

I think I will take your advice and give Rocky more wet food to fatten him up.

Is it 13 weeks for GCCF? I thought it was 12 weeks.
They are both registered with GCCF, I'm just waiting for the registration documents to be sent on to me as they did not arrive in time. My breeder made a few mistakes in the application.

Re: I think my new kittens are ill.

our 2 kittens get a little bit of a build up of brown crusty stuff near their eyes every 3 days i think it becomes noticeable

they also sneezed the first few days but i think it was where they'd been behind the washing machine and under the settees and got dusty

Re: I think my new kittens are ill.

The GCCF recommendation is that kittens go at 13 weeks with a full course of vaccinations, with at least 1 week clear from the last vaccintion.

Any kind of vaccination is an assault on their immune systems, as is the stress of moving home, so thats why its best not to combine the two too closely together. From what I can find Purevax has live elements, which can cause mild symptoms, especially when the immune system is under stress, and that is possibly what you are seeing.

Re: I think my new kittens are ill.

Thanks to all of you for your comments and advice.

We just got home from the vets. She said it looks like mild cat flu symptoms. But they're fine.

Rocky is slightly underweight. The vet said it could be that he was born with worms or was the runt of the litter, but should fill out. I think so too as he does eat well. Sapphire was a good weight and size.

They had another vaccination, were microchipped and had worming tablets.
Rocky was a bit of a drama queen when it came to the taking the tablet and being microchipped. He struggled and squeaked. lol. Sapphire was good.

They're now home and happy as ever playing with their toys so all in all wasn't too stressful for them (or me!)
