James Wellbeloved Kitten Food

Hi,

We have had a 10 week old kitten for 10 days and are trying to change his diet to James Wellbeloved kitten food by gradually increasing his amount over a week. He has been on some basic breederpack food mixed with Go Cat.

But his motions have been very loose and very frequent, 3-5 times a day. He is a very happy kitten and is playing, using his scratching post, washing himself, eating/drinking etc.

He has had his first vaccination and worming tablet which we blamed for the loose motions. But it is still continuing and we are at our wits end to get his bowel movements more settled/normal.

Has anyone had similar problems with James Wellbeloved and advice for some food that will make his motion more normal?!

Many Thanks
Tim

Re: James Wellbeloved Kitten Food

It may or may not be of any significance, but JWB have been taken over by Pedigree, and the rumour is that the formulation may have been changed, at least with their dog food.

This is just a chinese whisper! JWB and sister company RC are still produced in exactly the same way they always have. Still the same factories, staff, formula and still made independantly from parent company (Crown pet foods who are owned by Mars).

Pedigree do not 'own JWB', its just Mars bought over both of these and many pet food companies. So pedigree and JWB have the same parent company. And this is old news, happened quite a few years ago.

To the OP, JWB is a really great cat food, give it a week... If you still don't see an improvement then it may be time to choice another premium cat food.

Three of my cats are on JWB, and their stools are very firm. But it could be that it just doesn't agree with your kitten.

Are you using boiled and cooled water for him to drink? Sometimes water straight from the tap can irritate them

We have just been giving him tap water. We'll boil it today and see if that does anything.

Thanks

Re: James Wellbeloved Kitten Food

A week isnt really very long for changing a food over, especially at the same time as a new home, worming and vaccinations. I would go back to the original food for a week, let him settle in and see if his bowels improve.

If so then you can start the transition to your chosen food but alot slower. It should take 2-3 weeks to get him onto the new food, but if he is sensitive it could take longer.

I dont rate dry food very much, but JWB is amongst the better of the foods. Some cats are more sensitive to change, and combined with a new home, no litter mates, new smells, vaccinations and worming its unsuprising he has an upset tummy.

Re: James Wellbeloved Kitten Food

Hiya, just to add that one of my kitties had a sensitive stomach and it took her weeks to adjust to new food, she now eats Applaws Dry and Arden Grange with no problems. But if I change her food at all or give her treats of something different it makes her poop a little runny so we just have to be careful with her.

He is a British Shorthair and we have read that pedigrees can be more sensitive, would you say that Hill's Science Plan is the best? I have read that it would suit a pedigree kitten, but I don't want to spend £25-30 if he won't like it or it won't sit well with his tummy.

Re: James Wellbeloved Kitten Food

candy had awful smelly softer poo after being wormed, we were also halfway through changing food so stopped the wet food, went back to just the biscuits she came on and some plain cooked chicken. her tummy settled in about 5 days so we started the changeover, she is now on completely different food than she started on and has been fine.

You are right, pedigree cats do have more sensitive tummies when it comes to food.

My persian has a really sensitive tummy.

Nobody will be able to tell a food that won't upset your kitty, but I know RC (Royal Canin) has a food for semsitive tummies.

Hills is a good food, but it will be trial and error on your part I am afraid... Try and get sample packs of theses foods first.

Pets@home, vets, and online give out samples....

Best of luck.... x
