Constipation on raw diet

I started my two kits, miso (1 year) and sumi (5 months), on a raw diet ten days ago. I have researched feline nutrition a fair bit, and for the moment am feeding them raw muscle meat with some liver and Instincts pre-mix powder. All is going fine, except sumi has now not pooped since saturday (it's now tuesday morning). miso only pooped last night for the first time since saturday. I know they eliminate less on a raw diet, but is this not now a constipation situation for sumi? On the commercial organic grain-free food she was on before, she pooped twice or 3 times daily. Last night I resorted to Applaws wet food, chicken with pumpkin and I put some cod liver oil in with it, which had favourable results for miso, but still nothing for sumi. Any advice?

Re: Constipation on raw diet

sardines in tomato sauce - works wonders! They will be getting used to the new diet and some cats on raw do only poop every 2-3 days.

hmmmm, ok, I'll try that! Not sure miso would eat sardines, fussy girl, but sumi will no doubt savage them as she does everything, and she's the one needs the outcome, so to speak.. thanks!

Re: Constipation on raw diet

If the sardines get the royal paw-scrape from Miso, try some more raw liver - that should have a loosening effect!

When Minnii had her kittens she didn't 'go' for 5 days - the sardines in tomato sorted it out (I have a sneaky suspicion its the tomato sauce that works the magic!)

Lupin&co is an unknown quantity at this point
Re: Constipation on raw diet

Are they getting enough roughage? I have heard that cats consume small amounts of roughage in the wild in the form of whatever their prey eat through ingesting their stomach contents & also through eating some grass /plants

Re: Constipation on raw diet

Please be carefull giving more liver it could do more damage.(look on the net). Instincts have a great information link & will answer any questions. Are you using (Felice's)Feline instincts or (Natascha') who actually started it all off, Instincts TC?? Do you give chicken wings? I give mine once a week, but be carefull as too much bone can cause constipation.

Re: Constipation on raw diet

Also if kitty is constipated add more water to the food.
Liver represents the 'A' vitamin. Therefore, never over do liver in kitties diet 'A' is just as bad as not enough. & definatly no liver treats.

Re: Constipation on raw diet

The reason the cat's were pooing on the organic, is because (sorry to say), the more rubbish going in, the more rubbish comes out, think of it this way, they only use up what the body needs (too much cerial etc is just a way of the industry bulking up the food) you need a good ballance. So the kitties will excreate rubbish not needed. It's not natural for a cat to poo that many times per day. A wild cat will not do that.

Re: Constipation on raw diet

Thanks everyone, first let me say, sumi WENT today! Yay for poop! This after I gave her a teaspoonful of cod liver oil, neat, which of course she loved (this kitten eats everything). Baloo, it's Natascha's Instincts I order, just this order is delayed, so I'm giving them morning raw meals, with egg yolk and a tsp powdered eggshell, and then for evening meal Applaws wet, or Lily's kitchen organic, so they get their nutrition. I wouldn't give them extra liver - they only need a tiny piece per day, and if i'm not including raw, I put the requisite amount of Instincts liver powder in. The Lily's kitchen organic is excellent food - no fillers or grains, min 60% pure organic meat, so, no rubbish going in there. Having said that, raw so clearly has many more benefits for life-long overall health. I am concerned about different digestion times if I feed raw and commercial. At the moment I am waiting minimum 6 hours after raw before feeding Applaws or Lily's, and more like 12 hours after commercial before giving raw again. I do this because I am wary of allowing the raw to back up in the gut and cause bacteria problems, eg, salmonella. Some advise waiting 24 hours with commercial, but I believe that is cereal-filled rubbish they are considering. Others actually mix raw and commercial in one meal, and are not in the least worried about any health risks. It's early days for me yet in the raw game..
