Kitten Sneezing

Hi All,

Got our wee kittens home on Wednesday, all going well apart from lily getting stuck in the kitchen extractor fan but thats for another thread lol.

Liam is 5months, got all his injections but seems to be sneezing a lot, has a very runny nose and when he does sneeze its a messy business lol. He also has watery eyes but apart from that is happy and very playful. Hes eatting very well and drinking.

Is this the norm or should I take him to see the Vet, Lily is grand, no sneezing or watery eyes, just a bit greasy from being inside the extractor for a while

Thanks xxx

Re: Kitten Sneezing

Hi there...
No this is not normal. It does sound like cat flu which he may have been carrying before you got them vacinated (vacs are ineffective in a kitten already carrying cat flu). Kittens can carry cat flu but not succumb to it, but when faced with a stress factor ie, new home the stress can bring out the cat flu
I would highly recommend a vets visit, just in case it is cat flu. Cos he will need antibiotics (to make sure it doesn't go to his chest/lungs) and some antibiotic eyedrops to stop ulceration occurring.
On the other hand it could be an allergic reaction to something in kitties environment, though this is rare... Chlamydia is something else to consider as well, it causes heavy discharges from eyes, nose etc.
Wishing you and your new kitties a loving and long life together

Re: Kitten Sneezing

Hi there

First congratulations on your new kittens. I too agree with the above post in that it is not normal. As been suggested a vet trip is definately in order. I would also recommend supplementing both kittens with L-Lysine. This will stop the shedding if it is cat flu. Here is a link from where it can be purchased iHerb.com - Vitamins, Supplements & Natural Health Products & look under L. They will need this for the rest of their lives. There is then no reason for them not to go on & live long healthy lives.

I hope this helps

I agree with the above but don't worry - you're obviously keeping a good eye on him. He may need further treatment so take him to the vet when you can.
Good luck!

I have heard of L-Lysine supplementation before but wasn't sure if it works.... first saw it mentioned on a US vet list some years ago... any clues as to how much to use, or does that not matter as it is a food supplement? I think I've seen it in H & Barrett... similar product?

Re: Kitten Sneezing

L-Lysine is recommended by 'some' vets, but should be used with caution!!! L-lysine tabs contain sulphites which can cause breathing difficulties in some cats... There is not tablets made specifically for cats, you would have to go to say Holland and Barrett and buy tablets there and cut them into quarters which is tricky... L-lysine 'can' be good for the immune system in cat flu/FIV+ cats. but would always consult a vet before doing so.... ie. its use in asthmatic cats could be fatal due to tablets containing sulphites.

ps.just wanted to add 'food suppliements' are not always 'safe' to use. You should ALWAYS consult your vet first! Food suppliements can effect liver/kidney function.

Hi MerlinsMum

Yes I think you are right they do the same or something similar in H & B. The regular dose for the powder is 1/4 of a teaspoon each day. I think if cats are shedding the dosage is different but the instructions are on the pot if purchased from iherb. I hope that helps

Oh & yes most US breeders use L-Lysine

Hi

I am not sure on the tablets but the link in my previous post is for powder that does NOT contain anything but Lysine. There is no sugar, salt, starch, yeast, wheat, gluten, corn, soy, milk, egg, shellfish or preservatives. Just a bit of added info & hope that puts you at ease

Hi thanks for your input, alot of people buy Holland and Barret tablets for their cats! And the tablets deffo contain sulphites, which are dangerous for some cats. Just putting the info out there.
And alot of food suppliements should not be used without consulting a vet.
