Is this the right choice??

Hi Everyone,

I know nutrition has been covered over and over again but was wondering if I have made the right choice.

When I got LouLou i stocked up on Dried and Wet and have now just about come to the end. I now know through here that Iams and Whiskas pouches are maybe not suitable.

Off I trekked to P at H with my note pad and searched through all the foods trying to decide which ones were suitable.

I have read about the meat content should be at least 50% but was not sure about the dried.

I looked at the Applaws, it read good but I remembered reading on here about smelly poos!! so sort of put that to the back of my mind.

After an hour of writing down contents and prices and eliminating various I went round the corner to a wholesalers and checked out therir prices too.

Obviusly whatever i chose i want to stick with and finally came to the decision of JWB ocean white fish and rice and Natures menu chicken, salmon and tuna.

I would like her main food to be dried but thought about adding 1/3 of a pouch a day?

The wet says 70% real meat?

Have i made the right decision?
How much will she need on a daily basis? (the amount of dried they recommend seems to be a lot for her) I know you can only say roughly but I would appreciate your expert opinions on what i have chosen and the amounts.

Hahahha this has taken me all morning just for a bag of dried and some pouches. I must be mad!!

Thanks everyone

Re: Is this the right choice??

Hi Deb,

I hate to say this but Natures Menu made my lots poo stink really bad

It's going to depend on the cats of course and I guess if you persist it may be better in the long run? We didn't.

We use Hill's dry but JWB is good.

We're use quite a lot of raw food now.

Honestly if I were you I wouldn't feed any dry.

If she will eat wet with no probs then nature's menu is a good choice, as is hi life.

Of course you can also feed raw or cooked meats.

Mine have 3 meals per day, all different amounts depending on the time of day, or if it's really hot none of mine ever eat much.

O no!! haha.

In the end it was between Hi-Life and the Natures menu...looks like I may have gone for the wrong one then!!

Maybe just maybe(fingers crossed) with only giving her a bit her poo may not be too bad.

Cannot beleive i spent all that time and may have got it wrong when it takes me half an hour to do my shopping!

I just want it right for her. She is my first cat for many years. Years ago everyone just fed their cats on Whiskas or supermarket meat or so I thought. Just shows you that without education and forums like this how naive us Joe Public can be.

At the end of the day you wouldn't feed your child Maccy Dees everyday would you and that is why i want to get it right for her.

I'm sure she'll be fine and very grateful for the effort you've put in

It's a subject that's often overlooked and I'm certainly learning all the time.

Thanks for your thoughts Biawhiska.

May I ask why no dry? This is a real learning for me.

Loulou has her dried out all the time but has her wet (up till now Whiskas kitten pouch) mixed with dry in the evening.

Once again I thought I was doing right and really looked at the pouch as a treat.

I have just unpacked my shopping and forgot I had picked some wet up in Asda too!! Its Feline Fayre simply. It says 60% real fish.

Anyone heard of this? If so is it recommended?

Sorry I sound like a right Numpty and hope I am not boring you all. I WILL get it right in the end!!

Re: Is this the right choice??

Mine have Nature's Menu - no overly bad poo smell there. I think you will find out what make your cat smell or not. Personally I don't 'do' dry either - it's just too dehydrating for cats IMHO! Cats have evolved to get 99% of their water from their food and so don't have a thirst drive - to get a cat to drink enough to counteract the dehydrating effects of dry is nigh on impossible. Someone on here had a photo of how much was needed - I'll try to find it. Any wet meat that is 50% + meat will be fine. I use a mixture. applaws, natures menu, hi-life, cosmo, and bozita and also raw.

I'd LOVE to feed Nature's Menu! It gets ignored here.

I don't feed dry to most of my cats as this can cause the runs and smelly poos. Whereas wet and raw/cooked keeps them firm and is a more natural diet. Of course 2 of my cats still eat dry, i keep trying to tempt them with tasty meats but thus far they don't want to know!

One of mine ignores it too. She whiskas/felix through and through. I am going to start mixing in the whiskas, she did notice with the felix, so we shall see.
