Old Cat - Take her for checkup or not?

Hi All

I have an elderly cat and when I moved house she didnt take it very well and had a stroke.
I found her laying in a pool of urine with her tongue hanging out and she was panting really quickly.
Also one of her eyes was a tiny slit and the other was normal (it was very wierd).
She has been fine ever since and the vet advised me not to bring her in unless the condition got worse because it would stress her out too much.
This was a year ago and it has not happened since.

Recently she started losing her hair and has gone really skinny. But I spoke to a vet who told me to use frontline on her as it was prob a reaction to the fleas - this did work and she no longer has this problem and the fur is growing back.

She also has blood in her poo and it absolutely stinks. But she has had blood in her poo for at least 2 years and has been fine. She is not constipated and is wormed frequently.

She is happy in herself and doesnt appear to be in any form of stress or pain but I wonder if I should still take her for a checkup.
Its really hard to decide because it will really stress her out and im worried that she will have another stroke or something. She will also wee and poo herself when in the carrier.

What do you think?

If she were my cat-i'd take her to the vet, try putting a blanket or something over the carrycase and thsi may calm her a little-it's always a risk-especially given her past but will be bigger risk or at least as big a risk if you don't,good luck and best wishes for you and her hun

Is it possible for your vet to come to you? Our last vet did this for our old dog, I know it cost us more but it was worth it so he didn't get upset.

i would take her to the vets if youre worried, would it be possible to put news paper in the bottom of a pet carrier, it would make disposing of "accidents" more convieniennt.

Some cats dont always show they are in pain. I would personally take her to the vets but if the vet suggests that you shouldnt then ask for them to visit the cat at home. Blood in poop isnt a good thing and hair loss could be due to stress which could be the pain you say she doesnt seem to be showing.

I would say that maybe her kidneys need checking out, but then i'm not a vet.

Hiya
I think your doing the right thing in taking her to the vets but try not to worry about the blood in the poo. Poppy had this for ages - but the blood was bright red - i took her to the vets and she had a sensitive stomach and the food i was feeding her was agreeing with her.
The vet told me that if the blood is bright red then it is normally nothing to worry about, its only when the blood is brown/black that it could be something serious.
Good Luck, hope shes ok.

Saffron maybe you should try and get her checked out before your new kitt arrives-a change such as new kitt being around may bring about more stress for her
