who is to say jabbing every year is responisble when there is not enough research.... you could be casuing more harm than good - every cat is different - you cant 'tar' cats that havent been jabbed as carriers of dieseases as most of them do not - i know many perfectly healthy cats that live out and have never been to the vets. what im saying is - think about it, way up the real risks.... you cant wrap up your kitten in cotton wool forever, if you let your cat out jabbed or not you never know what they come into contact with..... but just because i have these views this does not mean i am not a responisble pet owner just realistic - my family have kept cats for many years with these same views and we have never had a cat catch cat flu ( so touch wood and fingers crossed it stays that way ).

Re: Dilemma! again *sigh*
bugs and virus's i agree with but the original post was worrying about cat flu - which i am saying is highly unlikely that would ever happen. you do need to be cautious - i agree but you also need to be realistic and worry about real problems.... transferable problems ie fleas, mites etc..... not about cat flu in this circumstance.
also to amy i would def suggest reading the link i put in - and maybe do a google search about cat flu so you know more about it. Im glad your caring and worry about your little one - and im also glad you've come to the decision to let your friend deal with hers - as we've said its each to there own - you just make sure you look after your little one the best you can - and let your friend worry about hers - i know its not nice if they do become ill but it has to be her decision and she has to be the one that goes - they are her cats. hope all goes well with yours and dont forget to put on some pics of him growing up..... susie

Re: Dilemma! again *sigh*
Hi Amy,
I don't think you are being over-cautious, you are right to be concerned about the welfare of your kitten. Cat flu and other diseases can be spread from humans who have had contact with other cats, you should follow the advice of the poster who said to wash hands and change clothes before handling your kitten. Some people may have been lucky enough to have a healthy unvaccinated cat but I have heard of some cat owners who's cats have all been infected with cat flu and it is absolutely devastating, once one cat gets it it spreads like wildfire - never assume that it won't happen. I think I would rather have my cat vaccinated despite worries about vets who 'only do it for the money' - why risk your animals life when there is a way to prevent it from getting ill in the first place? |

Re: Dilemma! again *sigh*
I too believe it is better to vaccinate. Even the strays I have taken in don't get near the other cats till they have been blood tested and come back clear. Too late when they get ill!
You also said her cats go out all day, hence they are at risk of feline aids and leukemia, which I know tend to be spread by contact between the cats. Its a miserable death for them though, if they get it. I have seen it in a stray first hand, that was one ill cat and had been suffering for a while at least its suffering was ended. |
