I know this is a question that any pet owner must face him/herself, but I would appreciate opinions.
If you had an older pet who was diagnosed with a serious disease but were fairly certain that some treatment would extend the pet's life for a year or more, would you pay several thousand dollars? Can you put a price on a beloved pet?
This question continually goes through my head.

Personally so long as the treatment would give the pet a decent quality of life I would willingly pay but if giving the treatment did not alleviate the pet's suffering at all then I would make the hardest decision of them all.

I agree with ChinaB-if the treatment would give your cat a "normal" quality of life and it's not gonna cripple you financially then of course,but also think about the age of your cat and would he/she be able to take the stress of going under etc,my heart goes out to you Seven-know this is a proper soul destroying decision(most of us have had to make these choices)hard as it is you have to shove your emotions underground,your vet will have hopefully have explained to you step by step what would happen-deep breath and think hard and honestly,big hugs to you and i'm sure you'll make the right choice

I agree with the above posts, quality over quantity. It is a very difficult decision to make.

I am looking after kitty - Vets offered many times to put him to sleep as it is "too much money and too much hard work".
I am slaving and spending and happy to give him his life - as he's enjoying it as much as he could.
Cuddling, "playing football" , interracting with other cats and kittens.
Cant take it away from him.

Can you get him insured to get help with the cost?

if he is ill at the time of insuring i dont think policy would cover it.Also some companies are funny with ongoing illness and wont cover for duration.

I appreciate all comments. I do not have insurance for this cat. She is 15. I have read a little bit about insurance, and they wouldn't cover a cat over the age of 10. I seem to be up one day, down the next. She is, however, very hungry and active for all that she has been through. She has been on chemo for almost two years. It seems like there are so many reasons to give up on her, but we are not there yet.

I felt I had to comment on this post as anyone going through this deserves all the help/opinions they can get.

I have limited experience of a similar situation; all i can say is - when its time you’ll know its time- I wouldn’t have believed this statement before I lost my Doggy of 18 years; but believe me it is very true.

from an outsiders view - When your around her you will know if she's just not right. If the bad times are briefly after treatment and generally she is alert and bright i would say treatment is a worthwhile expense if it were to give her, say 2 years of only been unhappy (after treatment) for a few hours 3-4 days per week. I say this because the sad fact of it is you cannot explain to an animal " its ok, you may feel really bad 6 days out of 7, but look at the love i can shower you with for the next year"
