Re: Advice on New Kitten

How old was the baby when he was vaccinated? I had a tonkinese kittens vaccinated at 7 weeks that had his immune systems wiped out as a result of the needles. He died at the age of 8 months. I believe that the vaccinations being given too early can sometimes cause kittens to be ill. A human doctor friend bought a couple of tonkinese kittens a few years ago. The vet gave them their leukemia shot...they both developed leukemia and died. We bought a rottweiler puppy from a registered breeder this past summer. She does not believe in vaccinations, but we did vaccinate the pup at the age of 6 months. Did you mention if the vaccines could be the problem to the vet? I believe that you should take the baby back to the breeder and have it returned to you when it hopefully recovers. I know how you feel....I spent $1500.00 on that tonkinese baby and still lost him. Hugs, Sue

My breeder vaccinated my cat , but she didn't vaccinate for lukemia because of the risks, she also advised that IF some one did want to vaccinate against lukemia it should be done in the leg, so that should the worse happen it could be amputated. A cat can live without a leg, it cannot live without a neck!

Re: Advice on New Kitten

That is exactly what I read could happen from the rabies vaccine. I always made sure my vet gave that to my outside cats only, in the hind leg. Here in Canada the only distemper vaccine is modified live and I believe therein lies the problem. Killed are available in the U.S.A. I believe. Do you know which type the kitty got?

Question me too!

We got our kitten from a breeder, (not registered but recommended) on Sat and by Sun pm it was being sick and had runny poo. It got worse and so we went to the vets and he has now had two antibiotic injections, special food, wormed and we are paying. I rang the breeder but she has not offered to help with payment etc. He is only nearly 7 weeks old and seems abit better now as we nearly lost him, but should we ask the breeder to take him back until he is fully well again or refund some of our money? We paid £180 originally and now we have paid all the vet fees too. Have we been overcharged? We went to a breeder as we wanted a healthy, happy kitten. He is a british short hair cross and really gorgeous. Any help welcomed. Thank you.

Re: Advice on New Kitten

Hi Mylo and welcome on here. Sorry to read about your poorly ragdoll kitten. I think others have already given good advice - it seems like the breeder is a good, genuine person who takes responsibility for her babies. I do hope the little one recovers quickly and that perhaps the kitten may be back with you soon but if not, please don't feel back about returning the kitten. As a kitten buyer, I would do the same and as a breeder, I would EXPECT any kitten to come back to me if there was anything amiss and vet bills would be repaid to you.

Sometimes, even if you do not have catties/other pets at home with you, when a new kitten arrives, it will be used to the 'germs' in its own environment and will experience quite a 'knock' to its little system having to cope with first its vaccinations just a week prior to moving to the new environment's 'germs'. Please do not read this the wrong way - I am not saying that anyone's house is dirty - just that we all have different set ups and will have at a molecular level, different air, different water, different things for a kitten's metabolism to cope with. This may set up a reaction. Some kittens feel this worse than others. I doubt with there is anything inherently wrong with your breeder's practises or her lines in particular.

Wishing you a happy outcome soon.

Re: Advice on New Kitten

I have to agree, the breeder is taking responsibility for her kitten. Sometimes these thing sadly happen and it's no ones fault. It's the down side to being a breeder. I hope that the kitten recovers soon, keep us up to date

Sweet Pea, I don't wish to upset you, but recommended or not the kitten should of been kept until it was 13 weeks old being a British. Although as she's not registered, she can get rid of them at whatever age she wants I guess. I'm so sorry your kitten is poorly and hope he fully recovers soon. You could try to ask for the vets bills, but it sounds to me like as she has'nt offered to pay, you probably won't get anywhere. I certainly would'nt send him back, not after you've paid out. I take it he did'nt come with any insurance ? All my kittens have 6 weeks free insurance(just in case) Personally I would'nt of paid £180 for a crossbreed and although you say you went to a breeder to get a healthy kitten, there are good breeders & bad breeders. Sadly some people are just out to make money!!!

Re: Advice on New Kitten

Thank you. i thought he was too young, but the breeder said it was fine. I guess you live and learn and I wont make the same mistake again. I did get four weeks free insurance but it doesn't start covering you for two weeks and so is useless to me.

Re: Advice on New Kitten

Oh, you're joking!! The insurance I send with my kittens covers them from day 1 of them being in their new home. I'm so sorry, it is the hard way to learn, but not at all nice for you or the kitten. I wish there were more regulations for breeders, especially those who don't register with a club!

Re: Advice on New Kitten

I agree with Rraa, when kittens go to a new home this is stressful and can make them quite upset it is a hell of a lot for the poor little soul to cope with,
also Rraa is quite right about each home has there own bugs this is just another thing for the kitten to cope with
Some kittens feel this worse than others.
Most breeders sell kittens with 6 week insurance starting from the day they leave the breeders home.
I think the breeder is being very responsible offering to take the kitten back,
this is more than some do
As the breeder is doing the right thing by you and the kitten you should keep this between you and the breeder just mho
I do hope your kitten will soon be 100%!!
