New kittens help!

I am new to this site, my first post!

we are due to collect our new kittens (7 weeks old moggies) in a fortnight and we are presently trying to source various products for their good health. Now my question is this

There seems to be so many products on the market for kitten care i find it so confusing so i would find it really helpful if people of experience could just give me some general advice regarding :-

Flea treatment
Worming
Food

Sorry to sound dumb but i am just looking for general advice from peoples experience etc

Thanks in advance

Terry

Re: New kittens help!

Hello Terry and welcome to the forum!

Congrats on getting your new babies I bet you are excited!!

As for fleas I use Frontline Spot On but I dont think it is suitable for kittens under 6 months (maybe check with your vet or on the packet) otherwise I would use the Frontline Spray. Frontline Spot On you can buy online without prescrption and Frontline Spray you need prescription.

Worms I would use Kitten Worming Syrup and you feed it to them using a syringe. You can buy from your vet or online. You dont need prescription.

Food I feed all my cats on dry food Royal Canin. For kittens you need to get Royal Canin Babycat (1-4 months old) and Royal Canin Kitten 36 (4 - 12 months old). You can buy this online.

Re: New kittens help!

Hi Terry, welcome.

Try to stick to well known brands. They really are better. Supermarket flea treatment and wormers are not very good. For flea treatment try Frontline. Worming tablets, Drontal or Panacur which also comes in liquid form. These can all be found on sites on the internet much cheaper than elsewhere and you usually get the blurb telling you about the product and what age/size of cat it is good for. Do you know what your kittens have been eating up 'til now? It's not a good idea to suddenly change their diet as this can cause tummy upset. With this in mind, try feeding a mixture of dry and wet food. It should all be kitten food up until about a year old - the best you can afford. Water is essential at all times. With food it's usually a matter of trial and error to find out what they like, but remember to change over gradually. They usually wait until you've bought a stack of a certain food and then go off of it LOL Hope this helps.

Re: New kittens help!

A little bit more............. Drontal wormers can be used over 6 weeks of age. Frontline spot-on from 8 weeks and weighing at least 1 kg. Frontline spray from birth. Panacur wormer from 2 weeks.

best of luck with it all,
Sue

Re: New kittens help!

Hi Terry and welcome!

Another alternative for worming is to get some Panacur from the vet. This is a paste that you syringe carefully into kittens mouth or put onto the food, whichever is easiest. They need to be wormed from about 6-7 weeks and again at 9-10 weeks.

Food: see what the breeder/current owner is feeding and start off with that, then gradually add some of the food you give to any other cats in the house and if you have only this one baby, then its just as well to keep going with the food he is being given at the moment. However, I think Saffron's advice is good. Royal Canin Babycat is a good nutritional food suitable for kittens of this age. I feed it to mine too. However, mine also get other strange things, like tuna in spring water, scrambled eggs, a small amount for the occasional treat of wafer thin ham or finely chopped roast chicken ....

As for flea treatment.... not sure... others will give their advice.

Re: New kittens help!

I feed my kittens (7 months old now) Orijen Cat & Kitten dry food and raw meat instead of a wet pouch food. They both love their food.

Orijen is a fantastic food, it's biologically appropriate so its not got any grains or additives in it just 75% meat and 25% fruit and veg.

Feeding this I have noticed that they both eat and poo less and have absolutly thrived. It's more expensive but they get through less because it is so digestable so doesn't really cost me much more.

Definatly avoid any brand you find in the supermarkets liks Felix, Whiskers, Go Cat, Iams and own brands.

Re: New kittens help!

My litter of kittens are 11 weeks old now. They have a varied diet which includes Natures Menu kitten pouches, Whiskas kitten in loaf and pouches, fresh cooked chicken and turkey mince, Applaws (available online through MPM products) and Hills kitten biscuits. They get something different for every meal and are all thriving.

Every kitten is different, they all have different tastes and you just have to try a bit of everything until you know what they like!

I have wormed all the kittens at 7 weeks first with Panacur liquid which they didn't like so I got some Milbemax tablets from my vet two weeks later and gave them half each which was much less messy. I will worm them again before they go to their new homes.

I haven't tried any flea treatment on them as yet but my older cats have been given Frontline spot on treatment which I also got from my vet.

Re: New kittens help!

Hi Terry and welcome-some great advice given so i won't add-except to say i agree in that see what they've been eating already and steer clear for now at least of supermarket brands as Alan said-i've found they tend to give the trotts and make dumps even smellier and it can often work just as much paying for fresh food as brand food-and with fresh you know exactly what they're getting
Good luck with your new additions and plzz post some pics as soon as you can-look forward to seeing them and hearing all about them

Re: New kittens help!

I use panacur liquid to worm my kittens, and drontal tablets for the older cats,as trying to syringe 3 lots down doesnt go down well frontline combo is good(only available from vets)as it prevents fleas breeding in the housei wouldnt bother buying frontline from pet shops etc as ive been told its been made weaker since its been released to pets shops to sell! dont bother with super market brands like bob martin/sherleys as its a load of c***!also feeding a quality dry diet such as science plan/hills,nutro,royal canin, orijen, its more expensive to buy, than super market brands but they will eat less, poo less, and benefit from it.And dont forget the scratching post!

Re: New kittens help!

My adult cats hate being wormed and I ended up shredded. The spot on wormer from the vet is also good but don't know if it is suitable for kittens.
