I was told using bicarbonate of soda to clean the area takes away any scent and discourages them from doing it again!

Had mine done at 5 months, 5.5months, 6months and the other at 7 months.

use"simple solution" to get rid of smell, also cats dont pee where they eat so try putting a handful of cat biscuits there to distract him

Yes, it's a very good deodoriser.
However, when we first had our rescue cat, he had an accident (his wee was very strong because he'd only just been neutered), and I found 'Neutradol' air fresheners to be really effective. It comes in a little pot that you just peel the lid off and it eliminates the smell practically straight away
