My cat's gone blind :-(

hi

was just looking for some help, advice, experiences etc...

we noticed on sunday that our cat Ronnie, was bumping into things so took him straight to the vets. they have confirmed that his retiners are detached due to high blood pressure. he's also had some blood tests done which i will get the results of this afternoon... the vet has given us some tablets to combat the high blood pressure and we've got to take him back next week to get him checked again to see if it's gone down.

he's an indoor cat anyway so don't need to worry about that and he's already ok with finding his food, water, litter tray and the radiators for his warm spots but i wanted to ask anyone who's been through this what the likehood is of him regaining his sight... the vet said that sometimes with the blood pressure medication the retiners can re-attach but not sure if she was just trying to sugar coat the news a little for us.

any response would be very much appreciated.

thanks

sarah

Re: My cat's gone blind :-(

I am sorry to hear about Ronnie, I have no experience of this, but I did find a few references on the net and they also said that it is possible for the retinas to reattach and for sight to return, it all depends on how long it has been like that for and how quickly it is treated. It sounds like you got Ronnie treatment really quickly, so fingers crossed that everything goes back where it should.

My friend had a dog that went blind, and he did adjust incredibly quickly. All her other animals seemed to know and make allowances for him. Being blind hasn't ruined his quality of life.

Hopefully this is just a temporary situation for Ronnie and his sight will come back.

I have done that for my cats before and even left the radio on for the dog when he was a pup. He was suffering from seperation anxiety when he was left on his own and the radio seemed to help!

Its up to you really - personally I would

Re: My cat's gone blind :-(

Hiya, I have had no experience of this particular problem, but with a bit of luck you will have caught it early enough and the medication may help him regain partial sight, if not completely.

I have had a cat that needed an enucleation (sp?) eye out in other words, and she has adapted amazingly to just having sight in one eye. With indoor cats their quality of life need not be any different if they get disabilities like this. You hear of cats having a leg amputated and then running around playing with the other cats quite normally. So think positive and even if worse comes to worse you can still give your cat a happy lifestyle
