Hi
I have two cats. One of them: shake its head, lose fur around head and neck (but especially ears), ear pinna is covered by greyish "spots", she is very itchy, sometimes appear redness (pinna).
The other one: just hair lose, itchy skin, shake head.

Both of them had darkish discharge but after swab test( yeast infection was detected) we got ear drops and now it is clear.
We bought advocate and now one of our cats has stopped to scratch.
Please help us to diagnose it. Thanks in advance Teresa

You need to take them to the vets - it could be anything, we are just pet owners not vets.

I think another trip to the vets is in order.... I would think its likely something related to (or disguised by) the previous yeast infection they had. Too many things it could be to mention them all, and noone on here is qualified or will be comfortable with giving an online diagnosis.

Let us know what the vet says. Hope they feel better soon.

Sounds frustrating! A few things come to my mind. Ear mites are possible but these usually turn up on a swab. However it's possible they were just looking for infection and not parasites. Ear mites can cause hair loss on the top of the ears as well sometimes.

Another possibility is ringworm which is a fungal infection that is very contagious.

It could also be a parasite called demodex gattoi. It is not very common. Your vet would diagnose it with skin srapings.

Sounds like more tests are in order!

I have met 4 vets and i am fed up. That is why I asked question here. Most of them expect food allergy but I do not believe at it. We did steroid injections, we changed food (veterynary diet) and nothing or no it is worse. Just only the lastest vet did swab test and told us that is not food allergy but she can not manage it and she sent us to university clinic. It will cost us 300 for a cat for first initial visit. I do not have this money. I know that I shoul go to the vet but I have no idea which one....I have no money to waste for steroids and diets which will not hepl....Sorry for complaining but it has been over one year and I can help my cats.
Can any vet do scraping test?

Yes, the scraping can be done by any vet. Demodex gattoi is not seen regularly in many parts of the world so if your vet does not regularly see Demodex a scraping may not be in order. But it is worth asking them!

You may also want to ask about the possibility of ringworm as well!

I would ask any of the vets for a referral to your nearest specialist centre.... then you should get a better idea as to whats happening.
