Re: Help! Tritrichomonas disease.

Hi,

I asked the question if antibiotics etc could inhibit the PCR test. On looking at Jody Gookin site

Department of Clinical Sciences :: North Carolina State University College of Veterinary Medicine

Follow link for owners guide to T. Foetus & also how to test....
she does say that the cat must not have been on antibiotics at least 7days prior to the T. Foetus test & that the sample should be of diarrhoea consistency & not a formed stool. And even if the result comes back negative don't rule T. Foetus out.
Roly was on antibiotics (3 weeks worth!) when he tested negative. He finishes 10 days of steroids tomorrow & then back to the vet. Roly is now lethargic & not himself & hasn't put any weight on in 3 weeks although not lost any. He is only 11 months old.
I am expecting the blood etc to come back.
I wanted him tested again but the vet said it was too soon........the vet is not getting away with it this time! Will have to keep Roly off the tablets first though.

Do read the Judy Gookin site if you suspect T. Foetus.

Margaret

If I were you, and you have found info you trust, I would print it out, take it in, and make sure vet reads it...... also use it to query your bill, it is their responsibility to stay up to date on best protocol for testing and treatment, not just expect you to keep paying and paying whilst they muck about......

Yes good idea Leah, that's what I did infact & when I saw my vet he had been doing his own research too. I gave him what I had printed off & thankfully my surgery were very good about it. I have everything crossed for you that you can finally get this treated. Please keep us informed Margaret

Re: Help! Tritrichomonas disease.

how can i get it cleared from my cattery when the vet will only treat the one showing signs of it. i have had her treated and got the all clear but now she has it again because one of the others must have it but not show any symptoms. i feel as though i am going around in circles, and of course the vet will not give me the tablets without all the tests which are working out very expensive.if i could just treat them all and get it cleared from my cattery i am sure this would be better for the cats as well as myself. i cant bring anything new in or let any of mine go anywhere else . has anyone else managed to eradicate it from there cattery

Hi Everyone,

Just to let you all know that Roly came off the steroids about 6 to 7 weeks ago & so far he is all clear & no problems & he has not been back to the vets. We think that by now the drugs should have worked their way out of his system so fingers crossed it doesn't come back!
Was it T. Foetus?...provided there are no more problems (& I hope I'm not being too premature) I'm not sure we'll ever really know.
Roly is 14 months old. Is it coincidence that he had had the problem 10 months? I was told it was possible he could grow out of it 10 months from the onset.
Both cats now eating again (see my other post). Our household is now much happier and calmer..........long may it continue.
It spoilt what should have been a happy & pleasurable time with 2 new kittens & if anyone else is going through what we went through, you have my sympathy.

Thanks to everyone for their support.
Margaret

Re: Help! Tritrichomonas disease.

Hi Margaret,

Tritrichomonas foetus is a relatively new disease and it is rapidly spreading. It was original found in cattle, but is spreading very rapidly in the feline community.

I had that on my agenda for tomorrow night and will post several ideas about this very rapidly growing disease that can cause severe diarrhea and take a lot of nutrients with it as well. It is extremely nasty

Frank

Re: Help! Tritrichomonas disease.

Thank you for posting that, my two are possibly suspected of having this (although one is much worse than the other) but fingers crossed it seems almost managed on Hill i/d wet food and Diasanyl paste.
