My cat has had kittens but........

I have 3 cats, two females, and one male. Not related.
One of the females recently gave birth to 4 kittens, yep gorgeous!
We introduced Ally (the female middle cat) to the kittens and she was fantastic, cleaning them up alongside Lou Lou (Their mum), no bitching or growling ever, can't belive it ourselves but those two girls have been diamonds. Now, situation is:- we have eddie our male cat, I held a kitten in my hand and watched eddie look at it and pay it some attention, he never ventured near it just sat on his spot and looked.
It was going well, however i moved closer to eddie with the kitten still in my hand then eddie turned up his bottom lip and his face changed, he didnt growl, attack or make a noise (i think he was startled cause the kitten looked up at him) and then eddies lip curled, i immediately withdrew the kitten from his range, eddie remained on the spot but i didnt like the look in his face, (he wasnt all puffed out, but looked kinda fierce), he then walked off, lol
Now the problem is this,we have both mum and kittens in the spare room, to be honest its smelling badly cause of the litter tray and the room warms up fast, how do i tread when trying to introduce eddie to the kittens again?
I would love it if we could leave the door open so lou-lou can come and go as she pleases but worry about Eddie, he's a decent cat, never fights with other cats, but im still worried.
Your reply would be grately recieved,

Re: My cat has had kittens but........

With big cats in the wild, a male will kill the young to make the queen come into season again. Is Eddie neutered? Is he the sire?

In any case I wouldn't risk trying to reintroduce them until they are a lot older and less vulnerable.

I would keep them separated. Males can sometimes be unpredictable near kittens.

Re: My cat has had kittens but........

Eddie has been nuetered yes.

Also and this has happened just now for the 2nd time, lou-lou keeps bringing her kittens downstairs and sticking them behind the sofa, why is this?
Obviousley this only happens when her door is opened to allow her half hour or so of stretching her legs so to speak

Re: My cat has had kittens but........

She doesn't feel comfortable and safe where she is. What she is doing is 'carting' her kittens to somewhere she feels safer.

Find her somewhere small and dark and she'll settle down. Even a cardboard box turned on its side will do - face it towards the wall so it is darker. I don't know how old your kittens are, but my girls do not leave their side for two weeks. And even then they only go shouting distance from them for another couple of weeks.

Re: My cat has had kittens but........

they are 3 weeks old roughly,
she concieved them in our very small spare room, we put down a litter tray, birthing box (which was a planting tray with 4 sides to stop em crawling off), padded it all out with her blankets and stuff, she does lay usually right up agaist the wall in the corner, i did think she might not like it but we always kept a watchfull eye on them when the door was open so she could walk about.

Re: My cat has had kittens but........

She's got herself confused and thinks there might still be up there - or she's just checking. Move the kittens back upstairs and shut the door!

But behind the sofa isn't a great place for them - you can't keep it clean and controlled for a start. They'll be pooing everywhere in another week!
