Hello! Does anyone happen to know of a good low fat dry cat food? Sassy our 3yr old Ragdoll needs to lose a couple of pounds and so far doesn't like any of the low fat ones we've tried. (Royal Canin, Nutro, Science diet) I have her on a Natural one that she kind of likes. I have to keep my kitten food for Milo up high so she can't get to it. He could change to adult food now but not sure which to change him too. Maybe I could give them both regular adult food and monitor the amounts? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Milo is great! Thanks for asking! I haven't been on the forum in a long while due to my Mom's health. She is better now however. I really need to put a picture of him on here. He looks a lot like yours! Beautiful! He is now 15 lbs and turns 1 in July.
I think I'm going to try and find a dry food that doesn't contain so much grain. Maybe that's what turns her off. I'm surprised she hasn't lost weight since she can't get to Milo's food and doesn't like hers. She has become quite the beggar. Comes into the kitchen meowing for treats. I gave her a lean treat last night and she looked at it and gave me a short meow and walked away! Kinda like "what were you thinking giving me that diet stuff"! Oh well, I keep searching!

You could speak to your vets about the R/D diet from Hills, which you can then change to M/D once they have the weight off or the Calorie Support diet from Royal Canin.

You need to leave this food down that you are changing to mixed with the old food for a couple of days and then remove the old food. When the new food is down and they don't eat it. Do not fuss and do not give them another option. Leave it and they will eat it eventually. Cat's are very cheeky and will work out that you will give in if you have done previously. BE STRONG!

Also you need to think about what you are feeding now and how much you are feeding. Your vet or one of the vet techs should be able to walk you through a healthy weight loss program and help you work out what measure of food is best to feed.

thanks for the good advice. She gets a 1/3 to 1/2 a cup a day of the low fat dry. She does eat if eventually because she can't get to Milo's food. He used to eat it too(in addition to his own) but even he doesn't like it anymore. I may have to feed her like the dogs, twice a day. Take it up after 20-30 min.. It is harder to manage a cat's diet than a dogs! I guess it's because they're pickier?

unfortunately "low fat" dried foods are useless for overweight cats, because they are very high in carbohydrates, and it is this that causes weight gain. Cats need zero carbohydrate in their diet, but they do need fat. So the only way to get your cat to lose weight would be to totally stop the dried food - all dried foods are inappropriately high in carbohydrate. Make the change gradually and ensure you choose high meat content wet foods (60% or more of the named meat ingredient)
I know this works - until last August my cats ate dried food as part of their diet, and a couple of my spayed girls were somewhat overweight - since stopping the dried food, they have slimmed down nicely and all of my cats are a good average weight now.

Hi and thank you. That makes sense. So many dried foods have a lot of grains in them. Are there any wet brands your cats like more than others?

Well yes there are, but as I'm in the UK and you're in the US, I can't recommend anything as the foods you have available will be different to what we have here

Perhaps you could ask on some US based forums or chat groups?
