Question Any tips for cat weight loss?

I have a 10 month old cat who could eat as much as she wanted and was really skinny - until we had her spayed. She got very fat very quickly after this, so we barely fed her anything (vet's orders) and she still didn't lose weight. The vet has put her on an obesity diet in which she eats more than we were feeding her, but she still hasn't lost weight! I have noticed that she doesn't really pee, she goes to the littler tray and squats but there is only ever fluid the size of a 1p coin there. Her bowel movements are fine. She seems healthy enough otherwise, very affectionate, likes to play etc. Can anybody offer any help on how we might get her to lose weight or if there might be something wrong with her? We don't give her any tit bits and try to play with her for 15 minutes every evening but she is a lazy cat at times.

To be honest Peeker-the only thing i'd suggest which you've probably done is feed white fish only maybe a bit of white chicken with eve meal and as much exercise as you can entice her to take part inDon't have experience with this so best i can do,good luck and i'm sure others will be able to help

haha not heard of those laser light toys, sounds good though, ours spend ages watching the reflection from their tags on the wall and floor!

I'm not really that clued up on cat nutrition but finding a way of getting her to do more exercise somehow and cutting down her food as well as a prescription diet or some of the things Kelly suggested sound like the right way to go!

Cool, got one of them about a mile away. I shall investigate this weekend ) Thanks for all your advice. I've tried the exercise and obesity diet but think more exercise is the key.

Ours go mental over the dot too-and it's easier than getting wrist cramp from twizzling and throwing and great excercise-so far it's one of the few things that actually makes them a little tired before i amDBrilliant

Re: Any tips for cat weight loss?

Most cats love those laser lights and are great at helping them to lose weight

With the obesity diet how much are you feeding her? Ideally she should be fed the amount for her target weight, rather than the weight she's at now (providing there isn't more than 2kg to be lost). In addition feeding multiple meals helps with keeping her metabolism going and prevent scavenging because she's hungry, esp if she eats all her food at once.

Does she go outside? Could she be finding food out there/going into neighbours homes?

With the urinary problem, if that is happening regularly where she isn't passing a normal flow it could be cystitis (common in overweight female cats). It this is a regular thing it would be worth getting her checked by the vet again as often a short course of antibiotics is needed (you may also need to collect a urine sample).

Good Luck!
