Re: Any tips for cat weight loss?

I only wondered as I've had a grossly overweight cat that I had to slim down, he weighed 2 stones when I got him and had actually lost weight previously. I've just looked on the iams web site and it says -

Medium cats, like the Burmese, Abyssinian and most unpedigreed cats should weigh 8 to 12 pounds.

Looking at her picture I wouldn't have said that she was overweight. I have a very square looking female who probably weighs about the same as your cat and she's not considered over weight. She's also a small cat as well, well a lot smaller than my other cats anyway.

Two stone, that's heavy!! lol. Well she came back licking her lips the other day so I am sure somebody else is feeding her up now, so at least I can stop worrying about her thyroid or genetic problem, she is just plain greedy!!
She is loving the laser light now, only problem is that she gives up chasing after about 5 minutes but that's 5 minutes more than she was running about before. Will try get those catnip bubbles. How did you get a cat to lose weight if it was 2 stone, that's mad!

Re: Any tips for cat weight loss?

Very very slowly to lose the weight needed. He was 6 when I got him so he'd probably been overweight for sometime. I just fed him the correct amount of food and then made sure he wasn't being fed by any neighbours once he was going outside. I used to tie some coloured feathers to a piece of string and walk around with it attatched to my belt when I was doing my housework, the cats used to chase it so I knew that Smokey was getting some exercise. I also used catnip toys to encourage him to play. It took over a year to get his weight down, I used to sit him on my bathroom scales to weigh him and make sure he was't losing weight too slowly or too fast.
To make sure my neighbours weren't feeding him I went round and explained to them why they couldn't feed him, I also had a dog tag on his collar saying that he was on a special diet and not to feed him, also had my phone number on there too and people would ring to say that he was visiting them and were they allowed to give him a saucer of milk!!! lol

Re: Any tips for cat weight loss?

Heehee, I'll get some pics of the 4 cats posted up soon (need to get the camera sorted out first though). I haven't got any pics of when he was at his fattest though The dog tag trick I've used a couple of times, once on Smokey and once on squiggles my stray cat I rescued (later found out his owners had upped and moved without him! ) on his I had 'I'm not a stray, do not feed me, special diet only' he's now a chunky monkey instead of a skinny minnie. So I've had to fatten one and slim another, lol. They both took time to get to more or less the right weight though.

Re: Any tips for cat weight loss?

That is brilliant. I think I will get her a tag made then and hope the people feeding her read it. I'm not sure who it is feeding her coz she just comes running back down the garden when I call her, licking her lips most of the time. She never used to leave the garden but now I can't keep her in, so there must be food somewhere to motivate her. But a tag is a good plan. hehe you sound so dedicated with your cats, be great to see some pics
