I have noticed that she doesn't really pee, she goes to the littler tray and squats but there is only ever fluid the size of a 1p coin there. Her bowel movements are fine. She seems healthy enough otherwise, very affectionate, likes to play etc. Can anybody offer any help on how we might get her to lose weight or if there might be something wrong with her? We don't give her any tit bits and try to play with her for 15 minutes every evening but she is a lazy cat at times.
Is she having a lot of fish? There is phosphorous in fish that can affect the kidneys. Best thing i sto seek advice again. She seems too young to have kidney problems......good luck.

Re: Any tips for cat weight loss?

I'm going to get one of the laser lights today if possible and also taking her to the vets today so I'll ask them about checking for a urinary infection. I did wonder about that myself.

I am feeding her the amount that the vets prescribed (they marked it on a measuring tub) which is for her target weight but she is still starving. She opens our bins when we're out, won't leave us alone when we are eating, I came home to our load of bread scattered all over the floor and then in the evening my husband caught her with somebody's sandwich in her mouth, which she had dragged back to eat!!! So perhaps she is eating elsewhere. She doesn't usually venture out the house though unless we go into the garden (then she will follow us) because she is scared of the other cats. Her brother who is the same age we feed twice as much and he is still skinny. It's very confusing. I do need to try and play with her more but she gets bored after 15 minutes and doesn't react. Hopefully she'll like her new toy today!

Re: Any tips for cat weight loss?

Hiya
Thanks for all of your advice. I took her to the vets and she has put on weight again!!! Unbelievable. She is only on 20g (I think it's g) twice a day of her obesity diet which is absolutely nothing. She's ravenous the whole time and going into our bin and I came home to the load of bread all over the floor with chunks out. She never used to behave like that, but she is starving. Anyway, I got a laser light and our other cat (Rusty) loves it, but Badger, the fat one, she just moves her head around looking at the light and occasionally sticks her paw out to touch it when it gets close. She is so lazy! I played in the garden with her little bouncy ball for a good half hour yesterday but then I caught her eating my other cat's food. It's so hard to keep them apart. Here are some photos of them in the garden anyway, incase anybody is interested They are quite cute!

Re: Any tips for cat weight loss?

Truely beautiful cats, I love your black Girls do put on a lot of weight after being spayed but they do naturally lose it after a good few months as their hormones start to settle down.

Although she is on an obesity diet, dry has a lot of carbs in it, empty calories. Will she eat fresh meat. You could try substituting a couple of meals of lean meat, boiled chicken - no skin, cooked or raw if she will eat it. A good low fat high quality protein meal should fill her up a bit more. If she will eat raw then chunks of lean beef or lamb that she really has to chew on would make a meal time last longer for her, and may make her feel more satisfied.

Re: Any tips for cat weight loss?

Well she is warming up to the laser light, my husband is playing with it right now! hee hee. I haven't tried feeding her fish or chicken, I just presumed as the vets had advised this obesity diet we should stick to that. I do think she may be eating outside now, perhaps I was a bit naive before... she doesn't go far though so it must be the neighbour feeding her I think. I've not heard of catnip bubbles, what are they?I'm glad you all think my cats are cute. I'll try and attach a photo of Badger the black girl, she really is plump - I think those photos I put the link to were when she was thinner, lol!!
Thanks again for all your advice and suggestions! It has been great!

Re: Any tips for cat weight loss?

you can get catnip bubbles from pets at home, similar to what kids play with, but smell of catnip, just use them before you need to clean kitchen floor, as floor can get a bit slippery from the bubble mixture.

Re: Any tips for cat weight loss?

What weight is she and what have they said she needs to be? I've got 3 cats that are very different body shapes and also very different weights, and I've not been told my cats are overweight (well the 19 year old one was as he was almost 2 stone when I got him, but I slowly slimmed him down, now I need to fatten him up a little as he's losing muscle tone as he's a lot less mobile).

Re: Any tips for cat weight loss?

Hi Katherna
She is over 4.5 kilos and she is just 11 months old. She is quite small really so her belly hangs down and sticks out on either side of her body. Her brother is the same age, eats twice as much (at least) and he's pretty slim apart from a little tum hangs down now and then. She has only got fat since she was spayed, she was so skinny before that and it was her brother with the few extra pounds but she has also become more lazy since being spayed.
I'll have a look in cats at home for those catnip bubbles this weekend.
Thanks again.
