I have 15 longhairs so probably in the best position to reply on this I call them cow pats and if they get stuck to the bum I normally stick them under the shower and then blow dry. Obviously some cats are not tolerant to any of this treatment and you have no option but to take them to the vets and have them clipped under sedation. You would have to ask your individual vet on this and the cost involved.

Little bits of knots you are better off teasing out yourself or using scissors as a last resort. I bought a miniclipper from my vets (Wahl, its the best make and cost only £15 a brill investment) I clip the cats fully that I do not show, for an easier life. Thing is if you have a longhair they need grooming every day not every few days so get busy with the slicker brush lass!
