Need advice on litter tray performance please

Hi all,

I've just taken on my first ever full-time cat. As he only arrived on Wednesday I am keeping him in for the next few weeks and of course he has a litter tray.

The thing is I have no experience with litter trays or how often a cat should produce 'number two's' (to put it politely)

I last scooped out poop on Friday but since then there's been nothing. I'm now worried that he's constipated. Every cat is probably different but is there an average amount of times they should 'go' in a day?

Also, how long is it acceptable for a cat not to poop before you take them to the vet?

I've just googled the subject but didn't come up with much. Would really appreciate any advice or comments

The fact he has already pooped once would make me not too worried. Personally my cats go about twice a day. But my mums cat only goes onec or twice a week. Just like people all cats are different.

The cat is in a new environment and obviously a bit scared. I certainly wouldn't leave it more than a week between poos without taking the cat to the vet (or getting something for constipation). If the cat is not eating/drinking/weeing also, then I would take the cat to the vet sooner.

Never let a cat go more than 48 hours without food. Watching for them drinking is more tricky, cats on wet food diets don't tend to drink much at all, so thats much harder to monitor.

Thank you so much for putting a new 'mum's' mind at ease. I will keep a close eye on him

Hiya

My 2 seem to go about twice a day but every cat is different. Just a thought ... have you changed his food from what he was eating previously? It could have an effect on his stomach.

Yes, a little bit. He's had tuna and fresh chicken, raw piece of my sirloin steak we had for a treat the other night in addition to the Whiskas he's used to. Trying to spoil him to strenghten the bond (that's my excuse and I'm sticking to it lol)

Think I was being a bit neurotic as he now seems to poop no problem. Never thought I'd be pleased to see cat poop ha ha ha

I have 2 10 month old boys. Both poop once daily each, but like the size of a twix. They wee about 3-4 times a day each.

I know this is a bit late and your problem is now sorted, but for anyone else whose cat may not be pooing for a day or so another reason could be because his or her litter tray is just not clean enough for their liking.

My 11 month old is extremely fussy and will sniff his tray and walk away if it's not fresh enough for him, and he will hold it in until his tray is cleaned. It's infuriating as I know that as soon as I change his litter he'll jump straight on, kick the litter everywhere and do his business!

He is adorable, though

Hello

I have two cats and they seem to go twice a day like everyone else has been suggesting. I think though if you have not had the cat for long they will be still ajusting to their new home and possibly differnt food to what they are used to so this may effect things too.

I found that when I give our youngest cat tinned food it gives her the runs, it will just take time for you to get used to eachother.

I think that if it goes a week and they have not been it might be an idea to get them checked at the vets. My vets are really good and are happy to give advise over the phone so maybe you could do that.

Lisa
