Question Cafs and C Sections

Hi
I took my cat Minnie to the vets today she is 1 year old and pregnant, I know exactly when this happened as it was the only time she was out, she is 43 days pregnant, they told me she is expecting 2 babies but as she is small herself they suggested they spay her tomorrow and terminate the pregnancy as the babies may get to big and she could have problems giving birth. I asked if we could book a C section but they did not seem very keen, my main concern is Minnie I would love her to have the kittens has anyone else had this dilemma?
Thanks
Sharon

Re: Cafs and C Sections

I am sorry I cannot advise you on this but if I were you I would get a second opinion.
I did this with my cat. My other vet didn't mind. I just wanted the best for her.
Hope this helps.
Let us know how you get on.

Spay a cat at 43 days?! No way would I ever agree to that. The chances are she will be just fine - small cats have kittens all the time. If she does get into difficulty, then you need a caesarean. Of course vets charge a lot more for a caesarean than a spay even of a heavily pregnant cat.

I wouldn't book a caesarean in advance - for a start the cat may well give birth without difficulty and you will just be throwing your money away. Secondly, going through the birth process starts the maternal hormones kicking in. Now they do seem to kick in a few hours before but timing it that well is not easy and the last thing you want is for Mum to reject the kittens.

Re: Cafs and C Sections

I would find another vet, what a terrible thing to suggest. There is nothing to suggest that just because she is small she is going to have difficulty giving birth naturally. In fact most breeders will say that their small queens shell peas and its their bigger ones that have difficulties. I also have to say that "small" in some ones eyes is relative. A friend was going to breed from her siamese, but her vet told her she was way too small - knowing NOTHING about the breed. If he had been properly informed he would know that she actually is above average size for her breed. When it comes to birth and new born kittens, apart from being handy and often slightly over zealous with the scalpel I have found vets knowledge to be sorely lacking. They do not have enough experience.

I would find another vet in your area, and register her there, incase you do need a caesar, but more than likely she will be fine, and you will have nothing to worry about.

Hiya,
Can't offer any advice as such but just wanted to say that my Fizz was 16 months when she delivered her kittens 4 weeks ago. She is by no means a big cat and despite a difficult first delivery she delivered the 2nd herself without any problems and both kittens are thriving.
