general advice needed. please help!

hi everybody. I am new to this forum, i only joined it yesterday.
i need a general advice feeding my cat. i am completely confused after reading different posts here. i have about 2 years old(previuos owner unknown)tortoiseshell Jazz. we have rescued her 2 months ago from one of a local vets, she waqs envolved in RTA, and nobodyt claimed her . She is very sweet and gorgeous, but very very fusy about her food. We were told by vet that she is a fussy eater and wouldn't eat biscuits, but when we got her home she refused wet food and prefered dry . I didn't know which food to buy from all big selection (i am new to cats, Jazz is my first one), so i picked a random one from shelf - Felix. She loved it, but... it gave her constant diarohea. we took her to vet and he put her on i/d prescription diet food for 2 weeks and then vet suggested to try different food, so i bought whiskas and her tummy is fine. She doesn't enjoy it very much, sometimes she would lick a jelly or gravy and leave meat chunks untouched. i have tried different food- same. i tried to cook her fresh rice with fish or chicken- refuse to eat it, she hates my homemade cooking ! junky prefers cat food .
after reading in this forum i realized that whiskas is something like Macdonalds for humans. i hate junk food and i am healthy (more or less) eater myself, so i do not want my cat eat junk food
Please advice which food should i buy? which one is most healthy? i have tried to give her fish and chicken -she is not intrested, she only loves canned tuna and ham and i suspect she only loves it because it is salty so i don't want to give it to her very often. I am completely lost and confused and only want the best for my cat. please help. Any advice will be much apreciated.

Re: general advice needed. please help!

Hi i think they must put laxatives in felix!! load of c***! feed a good quality dry food, dont bother feeding wet meat its mainly water!! science plan, nutro, royal canin, proplan, and pets at home own label are all good ones.
Also heard that you shouldnt feed canned tuna due to mercury levels, dont know if this is true!

Re: general advice needed. please help!

In 2003 the Food Standards Agency looked at the mercury in fish. -
"The guidance was issued by the Food Standards Agency after a survey last year into levels of mercury in commonly eaten fish was reviewed by the independent Committee on Toxicity, which advises the Government. Pregnant women and children are already urged not to eat any shark, sword- fish or marlin because of they contain levels of mercury, which can harm the nervous system of babies.

The survey found the levels of mercury in tinned and fresh tuna were less than a thousandth of a gram. Shark, swordfish and marlin had about six times the levels of mercury of tinned tuna and about three times the levels of mercury in fresh tuna."

Probably best to avoid it or just use it as an occasional treat.

Hi and welcome Bubbles and JazzFor dried food our cats have James Well Beloved-turkey and rice, except for Noodles our sensitive tummy lad who occasionally loves Maine Coone biccies(Royal Canine),wet food we generally give them all white chicken mixed sometimes with 1/4 felix pouch,or with Sardines(no tomato or brine) and always Tuna Chunks asda's own with the brine completely drained off sprinkled with prawns, they also like Gourmet Gold but we only feed them pouch/tin food on occasion as we prefer to feed fresh and our cats prefer it too and raw red meat except our Seal gal Rosie will only eat raw when she is pregnant or nursingKnow it sounds mad but their is some hams none of them will touch but some they love

Hello and a warm welcome

I feed my cats either Hills science diet (chicken) or Orijen which is 75% meat in a biscuit form (available from zooplus) and they do great on it. Ive tried others but ended up with jippy tums. I sometimes add a little Hills pouch to the dry food as a treat.

Mine too ,like some of the others have mentioned also get the odd tin of Tuna (i always buy it in spring water as was told Brine is bad for cats??).

All the best, Ang x

Maybe soak dry food in boiled water to soften-jazz has been thru a lot so and she's female so it's her right to be fussy-maybe you just didn't baste the chicken enough

Re: general advice needed. please help!

Hi,

If you are looking for a middle ground more affordable food, as opposed to the bottom of the barrel junk food, then there is Chicken Soup For The Pet Lovers (dog/Cat) Soul.

It is better than Friskies, for instance. ... no colorings or bad stuff like that. It does have some grain. Rice...and Barley, maybe----have to go look later and correct .... (yep..I went and looked at the bag. Cracked barley and a bit of millet)

BUT .......when I switched from Friskies to CSFTPLS, the cat poop container in my automatic litter pan, which previously had to be emptied every 24 hours , (I have 3 cats), all of a sudden did not have to be emptied for 3 DAYS! Whoo, hooo! Less poopy !

That means that the food is denser and more nutritious and the system is absorbing/utilizing more nutrients. That also causes them not to eat as often, because they feel *full* as there are more nutrients and the nutrients are doing... there job by being absorbed by the bodies needs!

Sorry I have to keep editing. I had someone at the phone and then the door! Anyway, from there if you want more of a quaility food, there are many, which are a bit pricier, but affordable if you are not feeding a multi-cat family as I am , and a DIVA POODLE, who takes first place

You can also feed raw .....or prepared RAW! Your fur baby might like the Nature's Variety Raw Medallions! I did some research on them and I feed that to the DIVA <G>

This is everything I know about the company and the foods Nature's Variety

There is also a new food on the market now (no preservatives or anything bad) It is actually sold in the Super markets, which *up until now* have only sold Pet junk foods. I recently contacted them by phone and email and here is what I have on them (below) ...... I bought some for the DIVA and she thinks it is OK! It's called Fresh Pet and Deli-Fresh and here is the communication from the consumers person I spoke to and emailed. - FreshPet and Deli Fresh

It has to stay refrigerated (No preservatives) and is in the Pet Food Isle at the grocery stores in its own case. Smells good, sort of like Beef Sticks. Ingredients are really good also! Hopefully this will give you a place to start to make some choices that you are comfortable with
